BLANCA – The Sierra Grande High School baseball team played at home for the final time this season as it hosted La Veta Tuesday at the Panthers’ field.
The home field did not help the Panthers as they lost both games by scores of 23-9 and 20-5.
Game 1
The Redhawks struck first with seven runs in the top of the first inning. Weston Huff led off by reaching on an error, and Joaquin Gallegos and Jaxon Salapich both getting walks. Huff scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game.
Dave Rael singled home Gallegos, and Salapich came home on a wild pitch. Miguel Rivera also walked, and Tayten Medina singled to drive home Rael. Rivera scored on another wild pitch, and Mariano Bobian was hit by a pitch. Huff singled to plate both Medina and Bobian for a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Samuel Gonzalez led off with a single, and Jadyn Martinez was hit by a pitch. Carlos Lopez’s single brought home both Gonzalez and Martinez.
La Veta scored once in the top of the second. Rael walked and stole second. A pair of wild pitches brought him home.
Sierra Grande also scored once in the second. Jacob Portillo led off the inning by getting g hit by a pitch and he stole second, He took third on a wild pitch and home on another to cut the La Veta lead to 8-3.
The Redhawks scored twice in the third. Gavin Laird singled and scored on Huff’s triple. Huff came home on Salapich’s infield single.
The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Martinez had a leadoff single, and Lopez walked. Both runners scored on Giovanni Jacquez’s double.
La Veta scored three times in the fourth. Trevor Gulley reached on a fielder’s choice and Laird walked. Huff singled to plate Gulley and Laird, and Huff stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch for a 13-5 lead.
Sierra Grande scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Rolando Najera was safe on an error and he stole both second and third. Another error brought him home.
Martinez continued the inning by getting hit by a pitch and he stole second. He scored on Lopez’s single.
The Redhawks scored once in the fifth. Rael walked and stole both second and third. He was driven home on Rivera’s single.
The Panthers scored two runs in the sixth. Najera and Martinez both singled, and Najera scored on Lopez’s groundout. Martinez came home on a wild pitch but La Veta led 14-9.
The Redhawks scored nine runs in the seventh. Salapich led off by getting hit by a pitch and scored on Rael’s triple. Rael scored on a wild pitch for a 16-9 lead.
Rivera drew a walk and Medina reached on an error. Rivera scored on Darren James’ ground ball, and Laird walked to load the bases.
Huff singled to bring home Medina, and Salapich was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rael cleared the sacks with a triple, Rivera singled home Rael to wrap up the scoring for the first game.
Najera started on the mound for Sierra Grande and he took the loss. He allowed 10 runs and five hits and he struck out three and walked seven. Martinez finished the game and gave up 13 runs and seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
The Panthers had eight hits and were led by Martinez who went 2-2. Lopez and Jacquez led in RBIs with two apiece.
Game 2
The Redhawks got off to a strong start in the night cap by scoring 10 runs in the top of the first. Huff led off by getting hit by a pitch and he stole second an third. He came home on an error.
Gallegos drew a walk and stole both second and third. He scored on a wild pitch.
Rael reached on a fielder’s choice, and Rivera and Medina both walked. Rael came home on a wild pitch, and Gulley was hit by a pitch. Laird was also hit by a pitch to drive home Rivera, and Huff was hit by a pitch to plate Medina.
Gallegos hit a grand slam inside-the-park home run for a 9-0 lead.
Salapich was hit by a pitch and stole both second and third. Rael singled to drive home Salapich.
The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Martinez tripled, and Najera hit an inside-the-park home run.
La Veta scored three times in the second. Huff singled with two out and stole second. Gallegos singled home Huff and scored on an error. Salapich was safe on another error and another miscue brought Salapich home for a 13-2 Redhawks’ lead.
Sierra Grande scored two runs in its half of the second. Liam Lippus reached on an error and scored on Elijah Sanchez’s single. Sanchez stole second, took third on a passed ball, and scored on Gonzalez’s single.
The Redhawks scored five more runs in the third. Rivera drew a walk to lead off the inning and stole both second and third. He scored on a wild pitch. Medina was safe on an error and stole second and took third on a wild pitch. He came home as Bobian was also safe on an error.
Laird was hit by a pitch and stole second and third. Huff singled home Bobian and Gallegos was safe on an error to drive home Huff.
La Veta scored twice in the fourth. Rivera singled and stole second. Gulley was safe on an error, and Bobian singled home Rivera. Gulley came home on a wild pitch.
The Panthers scored once in the bottom of the fourth. Lippus singled, stoole second and third and scame home on a wild pitch.’
The game ended after four innings because of the 15-run rule.
Jacquez started the second game for Sierra Grande and he was dealt the loss. He allowed eight runs and one hit. He struck out one and walked three. Matthew Trujillo finished the game and gave up 12 runs and eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Panthers had six hits. Najera went 2-2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Sierra Grande (1-9, 0-4 District 1) played at Sanford on Wednesday and lost 20-0. It will next play in the Class 1A District 1 Tournament against Nucla Sunday at Adams State University at 11 a.m. Dove Creek and La Veta will play if the second game at 1 p.m., and the winners play for the championship at 3 p.m.
