MOSCA – The Sangre de Cristo volleyball team played its first home match of the season on Tuesday as the Thunderbirds hosted Antonito. The Trojans gave Sangre all it could handle, but the Thunderbirds won in four sets.
Sangre won the first two matches 25-20 and 25-16, but Antonito won the third 25-22. The Thunderbirds won the fourth set 25-23.
Antonito scored the first two points of the first set. Sangre closed to within a 3-2 deficit, but the Trojans scored five straight points to take an 8-2 advantage.
The Thunderbirds responded by scoring seven consecutive points to take their first lead a 9-8. The Trojans then went on a 5-2 run for a 13-11 lead.
Antonito led 19-16 before Sangre scored seven points in a row for a 23-19 lead. Alyssa Abeyta brought the Trojans within 23-20, but Layla Sinclair and Emma Jimenez both recorded kills to give the first set to the Thunderbirds 25-20.
Sangre took off to a 6-3 lead to open the second set, but Antonito came back to deadlock the score at 6-6. The Thunderbirds then went on a 6-1 rally to take a 12-7 lead.
Sangre increased the lead to 16-10, but Antonito closed to within 16-12. The Thunderbirds then scored four unanswered points to push their lead to 20-12.
The Trojans got as close as 20-15, by the Thunderbirds scored five of the final six points to take the second set 25-16.
Antonito jumped to a 4-1 lead to begin the third set, but Sangre narrowed the deficit to 5-4. The Trojans then scored four straight points for a 9-4 advantage.
Sangre closed to within 12-10, but Antonito increased the lead to 14-10. The Thunderbirds scored three in a row, but the Trojans responded with a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 19-13.
Sangre got as close as 20-18, but Antonito scored five of the final nine points to win the third set 25-22.
Antonito scored the first point of the fourth set, but Sangre took a 2-1 lead. The Trojans regained the lead at 3-2, but the Thunderbirds scored three straight points for a 5-3 lead.
Antonito also scored three in a row, and after a brief Sangre side out, the Trojans had another 3-0 run to push their lead to 9-6.
The Thunderbirds then went on a 5-1 run to go back into the lead at 13-11. The Trojans had a 401 rally to regain the lead at 15-14.
Sangre answered with a 5-2 run to go back in front at 19-17. Antonito tied the score on three occasions, but the Thunderbirds scored four of the final six points to take the fourth set and the match 25-23.
Desary Ojeda led the Thunderbirds with 12 assists and eight kills. Jimenez had six kills.
Sangre served up 15 aces and was led by Taylor Freel with six. Sinclair, Jimenez and Jezebel Beiriger each had three.
Abeyta was the Trojans’ leader with 16 assists. Emilie Gonzales led in kills with eight, followed by Haizel Romero with six.
Antonito has 12 service aces and was led by Leeana Navarez and Kimberly Sisneros both with three. Abeyta had two, and Shyanne Martinez, Gonzales, Jaylah Ruybal, and Romero each had one.
Sangre de Cristo (3-5, 1-0) hosted Questa (N.M.) on Friday. It will travel to Cheraw today.
Antonito (1-5, 0-2) hosted Centennial on Friday, and it will host Mountain Valley today.
