LOVELAND – The Sanford High School girls basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Akron, 43-38, to finish third in the Class 2A State Tournament Saturday at the Blue FCU Arena.
Avery Koenig put the Lady Mustangs on top early by sinking a 3-point basket. AnnMaire Stahn and Molly O’Neil both scored to give the Lady Rams a 4-3 lead.
Shasta Bond put Sanford back on top, and Brooklynn Reynolds drove for a layup. O’Neil made two free throws, but Reynolds knocked down a jumper.
O’Neil answered with a jumper, but Bond made one of two from the line. Kashlee Randel made two free throws to tie the score at 10-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Brinlyn smith split at the line to open the second quarter, but O’Neil hit two jumpers, and Randel drained a three to give Akron a 17-11 advantage.
Bond ended the run with a layup, and Makynlee Faucette knocked down a jumper. Jewel Caldon buried a trey to put the Lady Mustangs back in front at 18-17.
Randel put the Lady Rams back into the lead with a pair of free throws. But Bond made a jump shot to give Sanford a 20-19 edge at halftime.
Reynolds began the second half with a 3-pointer, and Bond followed with a layup. Koenig and Bond both scored to give Sanford a 29-19 advantage.
Taylor Benish and O’Neil both scored and O’Neil then split at the line. O’Neil scored seven more points to give Akron a 31-29 lead at the end of the third quarter.
O’Neil then scored the first three points of the fourth quarter for a 34-29 lead. Reynolds ended the run with a three, but O’Neil scored again.
Koenig made two free throws, Claire Crowther a 3-pointer, and Smith a layup to put the Lady Mustangs back into the lead at 39-36. Randel scored again, but Koenig and Bond both scored to conclude the scoring.
Bond was Sanford’s top scorer with 13 points, followed by Reynolds with 10 and Koenig with nine.
O’Neil led all scorers with 25 points.
Sanford’s final record was 25 wins and three losses.
Sedgwick County 60, Sanford girls 47
The Sanford girls dropped into the third-place game after a 60-47 loss to Sedgwick County in the semifinals in Friday.
The Lady Cougars led 16-15 after the first quarter, 26-22 at halftime, and 43-27 after the third quarter.

Correction on Sanford boys game on Friday
Because of an error online, the wrong Sanford boys basketball result was published in Saturday’s edition.
The Mustangs won the game 56-50, rather than vice versa.
Sanford led 13-6 after the first quarter, 29-12 at halftime, and 44-38 at the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter, but they fell six points short.

Sanford boys 47, Sedgwick County 45
The Sanford boys won the consolation championship after a 47-45 victory over Sedgwick County on Saturday.
The score was tied 10-10 after the first quarter, but the Mustangs led 20-16 at halftime. The Cougars led 33-32 after the third quarter.
Sanford outscored Sedgwick County 15-12 in the fourth quarter.
Trason Gartrell led the Mustangs with 10 points, followed by Ben Faucette, Ben Sittler and Travis Canty each with eight.
Tate Renquist was the Cougars’ top scorer with 17 points, followed by Josh Palic with 13.
The Sanford boys finished the season with 22 wins and six losses.
