ALAMOSA — Farmers and other vendors celebrated the beginning of the summer mercado/market season at the Rio Grande Farm Park on July 16.

The market is on Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. The next market, on July 23, will feature painter Regis Scott and a variety of vendors.

The Mercadillo en el Rio farmers market offers a wide variety of products, from the freshest vegetables (grown on-site) to goods from regional vendors, and fabulous local food trucks. Taco's Martinez was satisfying many customers on opening day with an assortment of excellent Mexican street food. Whether you're a fan of fresh produce, artisanal crafts, or international cuisine, there's something for everyone at the market.

According to the farm park's website, youth from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley and local high school apprenticeship programs are gaining invaluable knowledge about agriculture, ecology, and the natural world at the Education Center and the fields. Families come together to tend their gardens, often planted with the three sisters - corn, beans, and squash of various varieties. The farmer incubator plots house commercial farmers, members of the Rio Grande Organic Growers Cooperative, whose farming businesses provide accessible, affordable, fresh produce to the local community.

The Rio Grande Farm Park is home to a diverse group of experienced and new farmers. These farmers, hailing from Mexico, Guatemala, and Southern Colorado, are united in their commitment to organic farming. Their dedication to producing delicious and environmentally friendly food is inspiring and worthy of support, showcasing the diversity and inclusivity of our local farming community.

What started as a small farm stand with tables of fresh food has become a big community event. Every Wednesday in the summer, visitors can enjoy the park, listen to local music, savor local drinks and food, and purchase items from local makers. This helps farmers and vendors earn more money and reach a wider community of members. It also allows our local economy and food system to grow stronger.

What makes the Mercadillo en el Rio farmers market unique is that it's a farmer's market right where the food is grown. It's a rare opportunity for people to see where their food comes from and meet the farmers who grow it, fostering a sense of connection and involvement in the local agricultural community.
