CENTER- The New Mexico stars were shining bright over Center on Saturday, July 4, as Casa Blanca Park hosted an Independence Day celebration that drew residents and visitors from across the San Luis Valley.

The event began at 4 p.m. and featured a lineup of well-known New Mexico star performers, including award-winning group Sangre Joven, four-time Producer of the Year Daniel Lee Gallegos, “The Polka Queen” Latrisha and multi-award-winning solo artist Luisa G. Music. As the sun stretched across the evening sky, music filled the park, blending with laughter and the aroma of burritos, popcorn and baked potatoes.

“This is fun, the music is great,” said Rosemarie Salazar, a Monte Vista resident who attended the celebration. “It’s just a really good time for everyone to come together.”

Throughout the afternoon and into the night, performers kept the crowd energized with lively rhythms and familiar songs, drawing people to the dance area from the first notes until the celebration ended around 10:30 p.m.

One of the evening’s most memorable moments came when musicians played “La Marcha,” a traditional Spanish dance that brought people young and old together. Dancers linked arms, then formed arching circles as others passed beneath, creating a moving display of color and tradition. At least 45 people joined in, smiling and laughing as the crowd gathered near the stage to watch.

“It reminds you of growing up with this music,” Salazar said. “You don’t see this everywhere anymore, and it’s special.”

Another highlight came when a local young woman asked to sing with the band. She was welcomed on stage and delivered a strong performance of the country song “Tennessee Whiskey,” captivating the audience and earning enthusiastic applause.

The celebration also included a birthday wish for Center Town Manager Cole Webb. During one performance, musicians paused to recognize Webb, and wish him a “Happy Birthday,” who spent the evening greeting residents, socializing, enjoying the festivities, and dancing with his girlfriend, Tiffany Martinez, as community members offered their well wishes.

Mayor Archie Gallegos also attended, spending time visiting and socializing with residents throughout the evening.

As adults gathered around the stage and enjoyed the food vendors, children created their own excitement across the park. Kids ran through the grass with water guns and snow cones, laughing and chasing one another in the summer heat.

The Center Vikings held a fundraiser during the event, selling loaded baked potatoes topped with shredded cheese, steak bites, butter and red or green Chile. Community members lined up at the booth to support the team while enjoying a hearty meal.

As the evening continued, lawn chairs filled the park, and more families arrived to take in the atmosphere. Some children danced near the stage while neighbors caught up on local topics, from the lack of rain to the recent wildfire in Colorado. Others joined the growing crowd on the dance floor, where the steady beat of New Mexico music kept the celebration lively.

Although this year’s event ended without fireworks due to Colorado’s statewide ban amid dry conditions and wildfire concerns, the absence of a display did little to dampen the community’s spirit.

Mayor Archie Gallegos said he was pleased with the turnout and the strong sense of togetherness on display. “That’s true community spirit right there,” he said.
