MONTE VISTA – The Monte Vista High School opened its Intermountain League schedule on Friday as it hosted Pagosa Springs at the MVHS gym.
Monte Vista’s return to the IML was not a successful one as it lost to Pagosa 42-26.
Allessah Archuleta got Monte Vista off to a good start as she hit a jumper for a 2-0 lead. Karsyn Shahan answered with back-to-back 3-point baskets for a 6-2 Pagosa advantage.
Leah Mora hit two free throws, but Kylie Ketchum knocked down a jumper, and Ximena Garcia made a free throw. Shahan hit a jumper from shorter range for an 11-4 Pagosa lead.
Heysenny Beltran made a jump shot to bring Monte Vista within 11-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Shahan and Elizabeth Currier both made jumpers to begin the second quarter. Currier got another one to push the Pagosa lead to 17-6.
Madison Henderhan made one of two from the free throw line, and Beltran drained a three to cut the deficit to 17-10. Currier split at the line, but Archuleta and Beltran both hit jumpers. Currier scored in the paint, but Archuleta made two free tosses to reduce the Pagosa lead to 20-16 at halftime.
Currier opened the second half with a trey and a layup, and Lexi Campbell made a jump shot to extend the Pagosa lead to 27-16. Archuleta accounted for Monte Vista’s first scoring of the half, but Kaila Limebrook made two free throws. Beltran hit another jumper, but Amber Snarr made one of two free throws, and Shahan drove for a layup for a 32-20 Pagosa Springs advantage.
Beltran made a layup to end the third quarter, but Pagosa led 32-22.
Archuleta scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Currier buried a 3-pointer. Beltran scored in the paint, but Pagosa scored the final seven points of the game.
Beltran led Monte Vista in scoring with 13 points, followed by Archuleta with 10.
Currier and Shahan both scored 15 points to lead Pagosa Springs.
Monte Vista (5-4, 0-1) will host Bayfield on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Centauri on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
