ALAMOSA — The ASU Percussion Ensemble, ASU Steel Pan Ensemble, and the ASU Grizzly Ensemble dazzled the audience at Richardson Hall on the campus of Adams State University on Nov. 20.
The groups performed several works, including "Starfall" by James Vilseck, "Toucan Summer" by Kirk Gay, "Relajate" by James Wind Whitmarsh, and "Song to the Chirichua" by Clifford Alexis.
“Starfall” is a work that could have been composed for the San Luis Valley, replete with our dark skies, “‘Starfall’ by James Vilseck magically captures the wonder one has while staring up into the sky and appreciating the beauty of the stars. The piece combines many simple patterns to create one homogenous canvas, similar to how each star helps create the night sky. Utilizing complex but alluring harmonies and quick rhythmic patterns juxtaposed against long melodic arcs, ‘Starfall’ effortlessly transports the listener and performer to an ethereal setting," according to a review in Tapspace.
The percussion ensemble's performance of “Starfall” captured the transcendental essence of the night sky's beauty and set the stage for riveting performances by the steel pan musicians and the Grizzly samba Musicians.
