Monte Vista girls defeat Alamosa, 35-32

MONTE VISTA – The Monte Vista High School girls basketball team recorded a big win on Tuesday as it defeated 10th-ranked Alamosa 35-32 at the MVHS gym.

Aubrey Rothermich gave the Mean Moose then early lead with back-to-back layups. Cindy Cereceres scored the Pirates’ first two points, but Rothermich scored her third basket for a 6-2 Alamosa lead.

Sierra Daniels and Madison Henderhan both scored to tie the score, and Madison Henderhan made one of two free throws to give Monte Vista a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Daniels scored the first points of the second quarter, but Kyle Hawkins scored a layup, and Audrina Knorr made two layups to put the Mean Moose back in front at 12-9.

Daniels brought the Pirates within 12-11, but Leela Gutierrez split at the line for a 13-11 Alamosa lead.

Destiny Pacheco made two free throws with 21 seconds left in the first half to deadlock the score at 13-13 at halftime.

Emmalie Quintana opened the second half with a layup, but Daniels drove for a layup, and Cereceres made one of two free throws for a 16-15 Monte Vista lead.

Knorr answered with two free throws and later a 3-point basket to give the Mean Moose a 20-16 advantage.

Heysenny Beltran drained a three, and Daniels split at the line to tie the score at 20-20. Reagan Futrell then made two free throws, and Heysenny Beltran made another trey for a 25-20 Monte Vista lead at the end of the third quarter.

Reminee Mascarenas began the fourth quarter with a layup to give the Pirates their largest lead at 27-20. Rothermich answered with another layup, but Mascarenas made one of two free throws.

Ashlyn Rice made a three, and Knorr split at the line and later drove for a layup to tie the score at 28-28.

Daniels put the Pirates back into the lead, but Knorr made a pair from the line. Hannah Henderhan gave Monte Vista the lead, but Knorr made two more free tosses to knot the score at 32-32 with 28 seconds remaining.

Heysenny Beltran split at the line to put the Pirates back on top. Alamosa attempted to tie the score, but Monte Vista got two game clinching free throws from Cereceres.

Daniels led Monte Vista in scoring with 10 points. Knorr was Alamosa’s top scorer with 16 points.

Monte Vista (10-5, 4-2) traveled to Sanford on Thursday and lost 48-30. It hosted Pagosa Springs on Friday. Its next game will be a rematch with the Mean Moose Tuesday in Alamosa.

Alamosa (10-5, 4-2) played at Bayfield on Friday. It will host Montezuma-Cortez today beginning at 1:30 p.m.
