ALAMOSA – The Erik Melgoza Shootout boys tournament got underway on Friday at the AHS gym with Del Norte losing to Buena Vista 52-47, and Alamosa defeating Lake County 55-40.
Alamosa 55, Lake County 40
Isaiah Martinez gave the Panthers an early 2-0 lead, but the Mean Moose scored seven straight. Lake County tied the score at 7-7, but Victor Zepeda made three 3-pointers in an 11-0 run and an Alamosa 18-7 advantage.
Martinez made a three, but Zepeda knocked down a jumper for a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Jason Ayers made two free throws for the Panthers, but Alamosa finished the second with a 9-0 rally and it had a 29-10 advantage at halftime.
Jaren Peters drove for a layup and Martinez made another trey to cut the lead to 29-17. Caleb Brown answered with a three of his own, but the Panthers went on a 7-2 run to close within 34-24.
Zepeda’s layup sparked a 9-1 run to close out the third and the Mean Moose led 43-25.
Lake County started the fourth quarter strong as it scored the first seven points to narrow the lead to 43-32. Martinez scored in the paint to close within 44-34.
Zepeda than made back-to-back baskets, followed by Nelson Arambula’s layup. Tony Griego also made a layup for a 52-34 advantage.
The Panthers scored six of the final nine points, but could come no closer then 15 points.
Zepeda led all scorers with 23 points which included five 3-point baskets. Brown was next for the Mean Moose with nine.
Martinez led the Panthers with 22, followed by Peters with nine.
Buena Vista 52, Del Norte 47
Hudson Wingo gave the Demons and early 2-0 lead, but Noah Bailey scored three for the Tigers. Buena Vista then regained the lead at 10-5, but Bailey scored five more points to cut the deficit to 13-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Julian Lopez-Olson pushed the lead to 15-10, but Tytus Atencio drained a 3-pointer. That sparked a 12-5 run for the Tigers to close out the second quarter but they trailed 22-20 at halftime.
Bailey scored the first five points of the third quarter to give Del Norte a 25-22 lead. Atencio buried another trey to increase the lead to 28-24.
Buena Vista then went on an 8-1 run to regain the lead at 32-29. Julian Vigil broke the run with a three, Bailey scored three points and Calvin Quintana two as the Tigers took a 37-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Del Norte led 46-39 with 3:54 left in the game. However, Buena Vista finished strong with a 13-1 run to claim a five-point win.
Bailey led all scorers with 22 points with Atencio scoring 12.
Lopez-Olson was Buena Vista’s top scorer with 19 points.
Alamosa (1-0) will host Buena Vista with tip-off slated for 2 p.m.
Del Norte (0-1) will play Lake County today at 11 a.m.
