ALAMOSA – The fourth-ranked Alamosa High School volleyball team won the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament by defeating DSST: Conservatory Green and Valley Sunday at the AHS gym.
The Lady Mean Moose won both matches in three sets, and with the regional win qualify for the Class 3A State Tournament which begins on Thursday at the Denver Coliseum.
“It was tough point-for-point,” said Alamosa coach Annie Mortensen. “I think the difference was that Valley went to a tipping game and we went to a power game.
“DSST was tough as well,” Mortensen added. “I’m glad we had them first, get some nerves out of the way.”

The Lady Mean Moose got off to a strong start by scoring the first eight points of the first set. The Lady Hornets closed to within 10-5, but Alamosa increased the lead to 13-5.
DSST rallied to close within a 15-9 deficit, but the Lady Moose pushed the lead to 19-10. The Lady Hornets had another run and came back to within 20-15. But Alamosa scored the final five points to take a 25-15 win.
The Lady Mean Moose had another strong start in the second set as they took a 13-3 advantage. Alamosa kept up the momentum and went on to win the set 25-11.
The Lady Moose took a 5-1 lead to begin the third set. The Lady Hornets narrowed the margin to 5-4, but Alamosa had a 17-3 run to increase the lead to 22-7.
DSST attempted a comeback and closed to within 24-14. However, Alamosa scored the final point to take a 25-14 win.
Morgan Ortega led the Lady Mean Moose with 28 assists. Aubrey Rothermich led in kills with 13, followed by Ortega with 10, Taybor Wiedeman with eight, and Lily Heersink and Laci Christensen both with five.
Ortega also led in service aces with four. Wiedeman, Christensen and Rothermich each had three.

Valley won the second match of the tournament as the Lady Vikings scored a 25-18, 25-16, 25-13 victory over the Lady Hornets.

The Lady Mean Moose had another strong start as they took an early 7-1 lead in the first set. The Lady Vikings came back to close within 12-11.
Alamosa increased the lead to 20-15 but Valley scored three consecutive points to narrow the deficit to 20-18. The Lady Mean Moose scored five of the final six points for a 25-19 win.
Alamosa took a 5-4 lead in the second set, but the Lady Vikings took a 10-9 edge. The Lady Mean Moose then went on a 5-2 run to regain the lead at 14-12.
Valley tied the score at 15-15, but Alamosa had a 4-1 run for a 19-16 lead. The Lady Vikings tied the score at 19-19, but the Lady Mean Mooser took a 21-19 lead.
Valley had a 4-1 run to take a 23-22 edge, but Alamosa scored the final three points to claim a 25-23 win.
The Lady Mean Moose took a 5-1 lead in the third set, but the Lady Vikings had a 9-4 run to take a 10-9 edge. Alamosa then scored six straight points to take a 15-10 lead.
Valley narrowed the deficit to 17-15, but the Lady Moose went on a 6-4 run to increase their lead to 21-17. The Lady Vikings attempted a comeback and narrowed the lead to 23-21, but Alamosa scored the final two points for s 25-21 win.
Ortega had 40 assists to lead Alamosa. Rothermich led in kills with 14, followed by Heersink with 10, Christensen with eight, Ortega with five, and Wiedeman and Arreli Felix both with four.
Addison Rice and Christensen each had an ace for the Lady Mean Moose.
Alamosa (21-4) will head to the Class 3A State Tournament. It will have a first-round bye.
Four other local teams qualify for state
The remaining San Luis Valley volleyball teams that qualified for regional tournaments also advanced to their respective state tournaments.
Centauri won the Class 3A Region 11 Tournament with wins over Bennett 25-20, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-21 and The Academy 25-20, 25-27, 19-25, 25-16 and 15-10 on Sunday.
Del Norte won the Class 2A Region 8 championship with wins over Fountain Valley 25-17, 25-14 and 25-11 and over Caprock Academy 25-13, 25-17 and 27-25 on Saturday.
Sanford won the Class 2A Region 9 Tournament with wins over Limon 25-18, 25-18 and 25-22, and over Meeker 25-21, 25-17, 15-25, 13-25 and 20-18 on Monday.
Sargent won the Class 1A Region 10 championship with a win over La Veta 25-21, 25-15, 15-25, 24-16 and 15-5.
