ALAMOSA – The state quarterfinals of the Colorado High School Activities Association football playoffs will be this weekend with two teams from the San Luis Valley still playing.
The following are thumbnail sketches of this week’s games.
SANFORD (7-3) AT HAXTUN (9-1)
This week: The Sanford Mustangs will be on the road for a re-match against the Haxtun Fightin’ Bulldogs on Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Last week: The Mustangs defeated the Springfield Longhorns 20-18 at home on Monday. The Bulldogs defeated the Hoehne Farmers 60-0 at Haxtun on Sunday.
Last meeting: Haxtun won 60-0 on Sept. 13 at Sanford.
Sanford stat leaders: Trason Gartrell, junior, 585 yards passing with nine touchdowns, and 1,252 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. Kaden Cary, sophomore, 10 receptions for 120 yards and one touchdown. Ben Faucette, junior, six receptions for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Jared McCarroll, junior, four receptions for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Trason Gartrell, 72 tackles and two interceptions. Ryan Cordova 59 tackles and two sacks. J.D. Faucette, two interceptions. Jared McCarroll, two interceptions.
Haxtun stat leaders: Colin Cone, junior, 509 yards passing with four touchdowns. Ryland Wolff, senior, 388 yards passing with six touchdowns and 650 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Grant Statz, senior, 1,135 yards rushing with 17 touchdowns and 11 receptions for 106 yards. Zach Statz, junior, 650 yards rushing with eight touchdowns. Chase Goddard, 17 receptions for 429 yards and six touchdowns. Grant Statz, 133 tackles and six sacks. Coleman Firme, junior, 79 tackles. Ryland Wolff, three interceptions. Colin Cone, three interceptions.
Next week: The winner of this game will play the winner of the game between the Mancos Bluejays and the Byers Bulldogs in the state semifinals.
SIERRA GRANDE (9-0) AT OTIS (10-1)
This week: The Sierra Grande Panthers will play the Otis Bulldogs on the road on Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Last week: The Panthers defeated the Eads Eagles 50-42 at home on Monday. The Bulldogs defeated the Cheraw Wolverines 62-6 at Otis on Sunday.
Common opponents: Cheraw, Sierra Grande won 46-34 at Cheraw on Aug. 30, and Otis won 62-6 at home on Sunday. Eads, Sierra Grande won 50-42 at home on Monday, and Otis won 69-7 at Otis on Nov. 2.
Sierra Grande stat leaders: Aron Ojeda, senior, 1,452 yards passing with 36 touchdowns, and 278 yards rushing with two touchdowns. Bryant Tijerina, senior, 342 yards rushing with six touchdowns. Ayden Lopez, senior, 278 yards rushing with six touchdowns. Jadyn Martinez, junior, 44 receptions for 836 yards and 19 touchdowns. Rolando Najera, 24 receptions for 515 yards and 14 touchdowns.
