ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School football team was looking to recover from a loss to Delta on Sept. 26 when it hosted Bayfield this past Friday at the AHS stadium.

The Mean Moose were successful in a big way as they took advantage of some Wolverine mistakes and cruised to a 50-0 win.

It was also the Mean Moose’s Homecoming game and the Intermountain League opener for both teams.

“We came out much better this week than we did last week,” said Alamosa coach Drew Sandlin. “Those turnovers ended up helping us a bunch.”

Alamosa got a break on the opening kickoff as it recovered a Bayfield fumble. Tony Griego and A.J. Baker both had big runs to put the Mean Moose into the red zone and Griego capped off the drive with a 2-yard quarterback keeper. Christian Hernandez’s point-after attempt was partially tipped and fell short.

Baker made the next big play as he intercepted Cole McWhirter and returned the ball to the Bayfield 23. Griego scored from four yards out, and he then threw to Victor Zepeda for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.

The Wolverines punted on their next possession, and Griego ended another drive with his third touchdown of the game, this time a 17-yard run. The point-after attempt was blocked but Alamosa led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Baker made another big play late in the second half. He was in punt formation and he threw to Brennan Maez for a 58-yard gain to the Bayfield 2. Baker then took it into the end zone on the next play. Griego threw to Brennan Maez for two points and the Mean Moose led 28-0 at halftime.

Bayfield attempted an onside kick on the opening kick of the second half, but it went out of bounds and the Mean Moose took possession on their own 48. Alamosa scored just three plays later as Griego tossed a 14-yard strike to Anthony Montyoa-Gallegos. Hernandez made the extra point and Alamosa led 35-0.

The Mean Moose scored again later in the third quarter with Zavier Maez reaching the end zone on a 4-yard run. Hernandez converted the point-after and Alamosa led 42-0 with 5:39 left in the period.

The rest of the game was played under a running clock, but the Mean Moose scored one more time. Evan Anderson threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Salazar, and Hernandez scored on the two-point conversion for a 50-0 lead.

Alamosa had 362 yards of total offense – 184 rushing and 178 passing. Griego led the Mean Moose with 80 yards rushing on 15 carries, and he also completed eight of 11 passes for 108 yards. Baker completed his only pass for 58 yards and Anderson completed is sole pass for 12 yards.

Hernandez also ran for 56 yards on four carries.

Brennan Maez was the top receiver with four catches for 104 yards. Zepeda had three receptions for 45 yards.

The Mean Moose defense limited Bayfield to only 32 yards of total offense which included minus-13 yards on the ground. Kaiden Witte was the leading rusher with five yards on three carries.

McWhirter completed four of 20 passes for 45 yards. Witte was his top targer with two receptions for 27 yards.

Alamosa (3-2, 1-0) will travel to Gunnison this coming Friday, Even though the Cowboys are winless in five games, Sandlin said they are bot to be overlooked.

“We have to stay focused,” Sandlin said. “We had a really good week of practice and it showed up on the field tonight. We have to make sure we repeat that next weekend.”
