CRESTONE - “Harmony in Diversity” was the theme for Crestone’s 4th of July Celebration, and all over Crestone Town Park, people of different cultures and walks of life could be seen enjoying themselves.
The parade that was held in the middle of Crestone at noon was a sight to see. In the parade, a big white truck, with a large red, white, and blue flag, patriotically laid over the front headed downtown. There were plenty of folks sitting in the back of the truck smiling and waving to the crowds, wearing fun hats that looked like they were out of an Uncle Sam poster, and waving tiny flags as the white truck drove slowly.
There were also a few people walking in the parade after the truck, carrying signs in protest of President Trump. There was another large white truck following shortly after, that had a “Blue Power sign on the front, with at people in the back holding up signs in favor of Democrats.
Saguache County Commissioner Tom McCracken was also walking in the parade holding a sign that said, “Clean Green,” as he walked through the parade smiling and waving at many.
A beautiful horse drawn buggy was also seen coming down the street in the parade after McCracken, with people wearing straw cowboy hats, smiling, and waving. There was one lady in a horse drawn buggy, wearing a pink shirt with blue coveralls saying hello to everyone.
The color guard also made their way through the parade, saluting everyone, with at least four lovely classic cars following them. Firefighters also came down the street, followed closely by Smoky the Bear who greeted everyone with many waves to the entire crowd. The fire department truck also made its way through the parade.
There were at least 50 people seen sitting at various corners of the roads watching the parade.
Back at Crestone Town Park people gathered and enjoyed music from a live band. Many residents could be seen in long jeans, long dresses, or with half shirts and barefoot, holding up drinks and dancing as the music in the park continued lively and loudly throughout the day.
A soap box derby was held close to 1:30 p.m. along with a continuation at around 4:30 p.m.
There were various vendors all over Crestone Town Park, along with tasty food trucks.
Event organizer and Real Estate Agent Nick Nevares stated he was pleased with the event. “This year Crestone’s Fourth of July, whose theme was Harmony in Diversity was one for the books. Headlined by Denver band, The Copper Children with musical performances by the Kosmos band and the Chronic Joy Collective. The day hosted over 2,000 people for 7 hours in the Crestone Park. The grand marshals, Patte and Dale Smith, both retired teachers and Crestone pillars of the community, led the parade, and we raised over $2K for the Crestone food bank by donations from the pie contest. It was a perfect day of community fun.”
