Centauri drops a pair to Pagosa Springs

SANFORD – Because of a broken water main which saturated the Centauri High School baseball field, the Falcons had to move their Intermountain League doubleheader against Pagosa Springs to Sanford on Saturday.

However, the move did not help the Falcons as they lost both games of the twinbill. The Pirates came from behind to take a 6-5 win in the opener. Pagosa used a big inning to defeat Centauri in the second game, 17-11.

Game 1

After the first inning went scoreless, the Falcons took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Ryder Norton was safe on a fielder’s choice, and Kendrick Martin followed with a two-run home run.

Pagosa tied the score in the top of the fourth. Kasen Limebrook was hit by a pitch with two out and after he stole second, Limebrook scored on Angelo Medina’s double. Medina came home as Kaeden Iguchi reached on an error.

Centauri regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Norton was hit by a pitch and Martin followed with a single. Erik Garcia reached on an error to bring home Norton for a 3-2 lead.

The Pirates came back with four runs in the fifth. Zach Pouyer led off with a single, and Sebastian Gonzalez drew a walk. Taylor Wells also walked to load the bases, and Aaron Sowle was safe on an error to plate Pouyer with the tying run.

Gonzalez was out at home on Dylan Dempster’s ground ball, but Limebrook singled home Wells and Noah Belina, who was courtesy running for Sowle. Dempster came home on Medina’s sacrifice fly.

Centauri answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Leland Chacon started the rally with a solo homer, then Dylan Gallardo singled. He stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on an error.

The Falcons were able to put a pair of base runners on the paths in the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to bring them home.

Dylan Gallardo started on the mound for Centauri and he took the loss. He allowed four runs and three hits and he struck out three, walked four and hit two batters. Grayson Hunzeker finished the game and gave up two runs and four hits with four strikeouts, no walks and two hit batters.

The Falcons had eight hits and were led by Martin who went 2-4 including a home run and two RBIs.

Game 2

Once again, the first inning as scoreless. However, Pagosa started the scoring with a run in the second. Sowke singled, and Gabe Lister, who was courtesy running for Sowle, went to third on Medina’s double. Lister came home on Jonathan Moncada’s groundout.

The Pirates broke the game open with 12 runs in the third. Hudson Davis led off with a walk and Pouyer was hit by a pitch. Gonzalez singled to load the bases, and Wells walked to plate Davis.

Pouyer scored on a wild pitch, and Medina singled home Gonzalez and Wells. Moncada was hit by a pitch and Belina reached on an error. Davis walked again, and Pouyer singled to bring home Medina and Moncada. Gonzalez singled to plate Belina, and Sowle hit a grand slam homer to increase the lead to 13-0.

Centauri scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Martin led off with a walk, and Hunzeker reached on an error to send Martin to third. Martin scored on a balk.

Kingston Jaramillo was safe on an error, and Hunzeker came home on Chacon’s sacrifice fly. Dylan Gallardo singled to bring home Kingston Jaramillo.

Pagosa scored twice in the fourth. Moncada and Belina both walked and both advanced on Davis’ groundout. Moncada scored on Pouyer’s sacrifice fly, and Belina came home on Gonzalez single to increase the lead to 15-3.

The Falcons scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Martin was safe on a fielder’s choice, and Hunzeker walked. Kingston Jaramillo singled home Martin, and Chacon hit his second homer of the doubleheader, this time a three-run shot.

Dylan Gallardo drew a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored as Warren Shelton reached on an error to cut the Pagosa lead to 15-7.

The Pirates scored once in the fifth. Limebrook singled and stole second. He scored on Moncada’s single.

The Falcons also scored once in the fifth. Norton had a leadoff single, Martin was hit by a pitch, and Hunzeker walked. Norton came home on a wild pitch.

Pagosa scored another run in the sixth. Davis led off with a double and scored on Pouyer’s single.

Centauri attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Kingston Jaramillo walked and Dylan Gallardo singled. Shelton singled home Kingston Jaramillo, and Garcia singled to bring home Dylan Gallardo.

The Falcons had two more base runners but were left stranded.

Drake Gallardo was Centauri’s starting pitcher and he was dealt the loss. He allowed 12 runs and six hits with two strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters. Hunzeker went to the mount in the third and gave up five runs and three hits and he struck out four and walked three. Dylan Gallardo finished the game and gave up no runs and no hits with one strikeout and no walks.

The Falcons had nine hits and were led by Dylan Gallardo who went 2-4 with ine RBI, and Shelton who went 2-5 with two RBIs.

Centauri (8-7, 0-4) hosted Buena Vista on Tuesday. It will play a doubleheader at Alamosa on Friday with the first game to begin at 10 a.m.
