Centauri boys still undefeated going into final week

LA JARA – The sixth-ranked Centauri High School boys basketball team had little trouble when it hosted Pagosa Springs Saturday at the CHS gym.

The Falcons won by a score of 56-20 to enter the final week of the regular season undefeated.

Carson Bagwell made a 3-point basket to open the scoring, but Creede Dozier also made a three to tie the score.

Troy Sowards then stole the ball and went in for a dunk. Bagwell made another trey, and Jace Haslett made a layup for a 10-3 advantage.

Seth Ziegler ended the run with a layup, but Bagwell and Sowards both scored again. Dozier made another 3-pointer, but so did Sean Jarvies. Ty Richey hit a jumper, but Bagwell made his third 3-pointer to give the Falcons a 20-10 lead at the end of the first period.

Centauri opened the second quarter by scoring the first 13 points. Kamryn Garcia opened the scoring with a layup, followed by a jarvies jumper. Carson Shawcroft drained a three, Bagwell made two layups and Sowards one as the lead grew to 33-10.

Jaxten Schiel ended the run with a layup, but Shawcroft closed out the half with a jumper that just beat the buzzer and Centauri led 35-12 at halftime.

Haslett scored four points to begin the second half, and Sowards scored in the paint for a 41-12 advantage. Dozier’s layup ended the rally and Rickey made one of three free throws to bring the Pirates within 41-15.

Sowards knocked down a jumper, but Dozier drove for a layup. Todd Broyles made a layup, but Dozier drained his third three.

Haslett’s layup ended the third quarter with Centauri leading 47-20.

The Falcons scored nine points in the fourth quarter while holding the Pirates to no points. Sowards scored two baskets, Bagwell made his fourth 3-pointer and Broyles made a layup.

Bagwell led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Sowards with 14.

Dozier led Pagosa with 13 points.

The game was relatively clean as only 11 fouls were whistled. The Falcons had six and the Pirates five.

Centauri (21-0, 10-0) had a road game at Ignacio on Tuesday. It will conclude the regular season on Friday at Alamosa with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
