Both sides make 10 3-pointers as Mean Moose lose to Taos

ALAMOSA – Both teams were shooting a lot from beyond the arc when the Alamosa High School boys basketball team hosted Taos (N.M.) Tuesday at the AHS gym.

Both made 10 3-point baskets. However, the Tigers had the edge in 2-point goals and free throws made as they defeated the Mean Moose 76-62.

Malakhai Ely scored the first basket of the game for Taos. Nelson Arambula put Alamosa on the board as he made one of two from the free throw line.

Mario Rodriguez extended the lead with the first three of the game. But Tony Griego and Arambula both made layups to tie the score at 5-5.

Rodriguez hit a jumper, but Jaidyn Burciaga and Victor Zepeda both made treys to give the Mean Moose an 11-7 lead.

Ely scored two straight baskets to tie the score, but Burciaga made another 3-pointer.

That would be the last time Alamosa would have the lead. Ely made two consecutive layups to give the Tigers a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Orion Salazar drained a three to begin the second quarter, but Zepeda answered with another trey. Orion Salazar knocked down a jumper, Roberto Trujillo buried a three and Ely made another layup and added a free throw for a 26-17 Taos lead.

Josh Gonzalez ended the run with a layup, but Ely, Trujillo and Ramon Quintana all made layups for a 32-19 advantage.

Jayden Lujan made a jumper for the Mean Moose, but Trujillo answered with a 3-pointer. Brennan Maez made two free throws, and Ja’Rell Long and Zepeda both scored to reduce the deficit to 35-27 at halftime.

Mateo Salazar opened the second half scoring with a layup, but Griego hit a jumper ande Zepeda a 3-pointer to close the margin to 37-32.

Ely made another layup, but Zepeda made one for Alamosa. Roman Quintana drained a three, but Arambula drove for a layup.

Ely made another layup and Mateo Salazar and Quintana both made threes for a 50-36 Taos lead.

Burciaga made back-to-back 3-pointers to bring Alamosa within 50-42. Mateo Salazar drove for a layup and Trujillo made two free throws.

Burciaga hit another trey to reduce the Tigers’ lead to 54-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Gonzalez made a layup to close the gap to 54-47, but Trujillo made a trey Maez split at the line, but Trujillo made a three and a shot from closer range for a 62-48 lead.

Lujan hit a jumper, but Ely scored on the other end. Zepeda made a 3-pointer, but Evan Salazar drove for a layup. Zepeda knocked down a jumper, but Ely split at the line and Evan Salazar drained a trey. Quintana also made one of two free throws for a 71-55 Tigers advantage.

Griego made a layup and Zepeda another three. However, Taos made five out of six free throws to put the game on ice.

Burciaga led Alamosa in scoring with 18 points which included six threes. Zepeda scored 17 and three treys.

Trujillo was Taos’ top scorer with 23 points, followed by Ely with 22.

Alamosa (2-10) played at Pagosa Springs on Friday. It will next play at Centauri on Tuesday with the girls game to begin at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.
