Alamosa wins regional, qualifies 13 to state

ALAMOSA – The second-ranked Alamosa High School boys wrestling team easily won the Class 3A Region 3 Tournament which took place this past weekend in Delta.

The Mean Moose scored 297 ½ points, well ahead of second place Delta which scored 158 ½.

Alamosa was led by six regional champions.

First, Jeremiah DeLaCerda won by a 2-0 decision over Skyview’s Andrew Pedragon at 106 pounds.

At 120 pounds, Anthony Meder pinned Montezuma-Cortez’s Teagun Samora in 1:49.

Then Pablito Rodriguez won the 132-pound championship with a technical fall win over Grand Valley’s Jackson Rugaard. The final score was 18-0 and it occurred just as the second period expired.

The Martinez brothers – Uriah and Daniel – each won their weight divisions. Uriah won by a 7-0 decision over Valley’s Diego Manriquez at 138 pounds, and then Daniel won by a 15-4 major decision over Skyview’s Anthony Gonzalez at 144.

Tony Griego then won by a 4-3 decision over Valley’s Carlos Corral to win the 150-pound championship.

The Mean Moose had two additional finalists in Jovanny Mendoza at 190 and Aaron Jordan at 285.

Mendoza faced Mullen’s Estevan Loya in the finals but lost by a 6-4 decision. Jordan was pinned by Mullen’s Champion Dyes in 1:52.

Also qualifying for state were Caleb Quintana who was third at 157, Ryan Cordova who was third at 165, Max Dokson who was third at 215, Jonovan Gutierrez who was fourth at 113, and Jonathan Olsen who was fourth at 126.

Alamosa 297 ½, Delta 158 ½, Mullen 153 ½, Skyview 144, Valley 124, Pagosa Springs 121, Grand Valley 118, Basalt 82 ½, Bayfield 82 ½, Montezuma-Cortez 80 ½, Rifle 49, Coal Ridge 30, Moffat County 25, Steamboat Springs 23.

Centauri to send seven to state

The Centauri boys wrestling team finished second in the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament which occurred this past weekend in Fort Lupton.

The Falcons scored 189 points, trailing only Fort Lupton with 268.

Centauri will send seven wrestlers to the state meet and it was led by two champions.

Noah Weyers won at 150 pounds as he pinned Holy Family’s Jake Pounders in 1:44.

Spencer Smith who won the 190-pound championship over Fort Lupton’s Donavon Buschman by a 3-2 decision.

Centauri had another two other finalists. Caden Casias at 132 pounds. Casias, however, lost by an 8-3 decision to Gunnison’s Cody Casebolt. Aaden Quintana lost in the 285-pound championship as he was pinned by Elizabeth’s Benson Inga in 3:22.

Also qualifying for the Falcons were Aiden Knecht who was third at 144, Dorian Quintana who was third at 215, and Noah Chavez who was fourth at 120,

T.J. Robinson came up short of qualifying after finishing fifth at 157. He took on Conifer’s Jared Rackley in a wrestle-back but was pinned in 3:34.

Tyson Montague was also in a wrestle-back after finishing fifth at 175. However, he was pinned by Alameda International’s Luis Palomares in 35 seconds.
