Alamosa girls open season with win over Del Norte

ALAMOSA – The sixth-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team got the James Romero era off to a good start as it defeated Del Norte 58-31 in the Erik Melgoza Shootout opener Thursday at the AHS gym.

“It was a great game for the girls,” Romero said. “They came out, stayed aggressive and they got the job done.”

Alamosa got off to a good start as it scored the first 17 points of the game. Jaelin Garcia scored the first basket, then Arreli Felix and Aubrey Rothermich scored two baskets. Leela Gutierrez made the first 3-point basket of the game, and Felix and Rothermich scored one more basket.

Ady Ruybal put the Tigers on the board with a pair of free throws, but the Mean Moose led 17-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Rothermich extended the lead to 19-2 early in the second quarter, but Del Norte started to make a comeback. Ruybal made two more free throws, and Emma Parra made the Tigers’ first field goal, a 3-pointer, to close the lead to 19-7.

Gutierrez made her second three, but Parra made two from the line. Brynley Brown split two free throws, and Parra drove for a layup and added a free throw to help Del Norte close within 22-13.

Kadie Hawkins ended the Alamosa drought with a layup, but Ruybsl and Brown both made one of two from the line. Audrina Knorr made one of two from the line and then drove for a layup. But Parra scored four points to bring the Tigers within 27-19.

Knorr made a layup and a free throw, but Parra split at the line to cut Alamosa’s lead to 30-20 at halftime.

Makenzie Consaul drove for a layup to open the second half, but Garcia made a layup and a free throw. Ruybal scored, but that would be the Tigers’ final points of the third quarter as Alamosa ran off 13 straight points. Felix scored five of them, and Rothermich, Gutierrez, Knorr and Garcia each scored two.

Alamosa led 46-24 at the end of the third.

Knorr hit a jumper and Garcia made a layup and a free throw early in the fourth to extend Alamosa’s scoring streak to 18 points.

Consaul ended the run with a layup, but Knorr made a trey, and Gutierrez and Hawkins both made layups.

Parra scored four points to wrap up the scoring.

The Mean Moose had four players score in double figures. Knorr and Felix both scored 13 points, and Gutierrez and Garcia both scored 10.

Parra led Del Norte with 12 points.

Alamosa (1-0) will host Buena Vista on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

“We just want to take one game at a time,” Romero said. “We were able to accomplish what we needed to today and play Buena Vista on Saturday and keep that aggressiveness and fine tune some things.”

Del Norte (0-1) played Buena Vista on Friday.

The boys tournament began on Friday with Del Norte facing Buena Vista and Alamosa hosting Lake County. The Tigers will play Lake County today at 11 a.m., and the Mean Moose play Buena Vista today at 2 p.m.
