ALAMOSA – The seventh-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team had a lethargic first half when it hosted Ignacio Friday at the AHS gym. But the Mean Moose got their offense going in the second half and went on to defeat the Bobcats, 52-17.
“I was really proud of our girls,” said Alamosa coach James Romero. “They pulled it together and made some adjustments. They came out ready to play. They did a good job adjusting and changing their mind-set.”
Leela Gutierrez put Alamosa on the scoreboard first with a layup, but Alyssa Atencio tied the score. Gutierrez scored again, Audruna Knorr made one of two free throws, and Emmalie Quintana made a 3-poin t basket to give the Mean Moose an 8-2 lead.
Catori Aasland hit a jumper for Ignacio, and Veronica Brown split at the line. Atencio scored again to bring the Bobcats within 8-7.
Ashlyn Rice answered with a three, and Jaelin Garcia made one of two free tosses to give Alamosa a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Knorr scored the first points of the second quarter, but Atencio split at the charity stripe. Aubrey Rothermich did the same, and Kyla Hawkins scored in the paint. Garcia made two free throws for a 21-8 advantage.
Atencio scored the final six points of the first half, but Alamosa led 21-14 at the break.
The Mean Moose started the second half red-hot. Rothermich, Knorr, Garcia and Quintana all scored easy baskets, followed by Knorr making two free throws. Rothermich scored again, Knorr made two more free tosses, and Quintana drove for a layup to extend the lead to 37-14.
Atencio made one of two from the line for the Bobcats’ only scoring of the third quarter. Garcia scored again and Alamosa had a 39-15 lead at the end of the period.
The Mean Moose continued the momentum into the fourth quarter. Gutierrez began the period with a layup, followed by Garcia splitting at the line. Brooklyn Schrader also made a layup for a 55-15 lead.
Jordan Wing made two free throws for Ignacio’s only points of the quarter.
Rice scored two baskets and Gutierrez one to wrap up the scoring.
The Mean Moose had a well-balanced scoring attack which was led by Garcia with 10 points. Gutierrez scored eight, and Quintana and Rice both scored seven.
Atencio was Ignacio’s leading scorer with 12 points.
Alamosa 57, Lamar 22
The Mean Moose won their second straight game on Saturday as they defeated Lamar 57-22 at the Lamar Community Building.

What’s next
Alamosa (10-4, 4-1) played at Monte Vista on Tuesday. It will travel to Bayfield on Friday and it will host Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday.
“We have a pretty good stretch,” Romero said. “We just want to take it one game at a time.”
