ALAMOSA – The third-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team had a Top 5 match-up on Tuesday as it hosted fourth-ranked Pagosa Springs at the AHS gym.

The game lived up to its billing with the Lady Mean Moose defeating the Lady Pirates 38-30.

Alamosa got off to a big early lead with Jaelin Garcia scoring the first points of the game. She then hit a short jumper and added a free throw for a 5-0 lead.

Audrina Knorr split at the line, and Aubrey Rothermich made a 3-point basket to extend the lead to 9-0.

Amber Snarr put Pagosa on the board, and Elizabeth Currier drained a three just before time expired to trim the Lady Mean Moose lead to 9-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Currier hit another trey to begin the second quarter, but Kadie Hawkins split at the line. Lexi Campbell drove for a layup to tie the score at 10-10.

Garcia made back-to-back layups, but Karsyn Shahan made a 3-pointer. Garcia scored in the paint, but so did Campbell. Garcia scored another layup for an 18-15 Alamosa lead at halftime.

Kylie Ketchum’s layup accounted for the first points of the second half, but Morgan Ortega and Rothermich made back-to-back layups for a 22-17 lead.

Snarr and Currier buried consecutive threes to give Pagosa a 23-22 lead.

That would be the only time the Lady Pirates would be on top. Garcia made a layup, and Leela Gutierrez made two free throws to give Alamosa a 26-23 lead.

Kaila Limebrook split at the line, but Gutierrez drove for a layup for a 28-24 Lady Mean Moose advantage at the end of the quarter.

Rothermich and Ortega both made 3-pointers to increase the lead to 34-25. But Currier scored five unanswered points to cut the lead to 34-30 with 2:59 left in the game.

Ortega and Garcia both split at the line, and Garcia also made a layup to conclude the scoring.

Garcia led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Rothermich with eight.

Currier led the Lady Pirates with 14 points.

Alamosa (17-5, 9-2) closed out the season on Friday by hosting Centauri, ranked third in Class 3A. The Lady Mean Moose will host a Class 4A regional tournament game next weekend.
