ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School boys basketball team had a slow start when it hosted Pagosa Springs Tuesday at the AHS gym. But the Mean Moose came alive in the second half and held on to defeat the Pirates 47-44.
Jaxten Schiel scored the first points of the game for Pagosa, but Jayden Lujan made a 3-point basket for a 3-2 lead. The Pirates then ran off eight straight points with Ty Richey scoring half of them and Creede Dozier the other half and Pagosa had a 10-3 lead.
Victor Zepeda ended the run with a jumper and he then made a three. Jayton Ross made a jumper to give the Pirates a 12-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Josh Gonzalez split at the free throw line for the first point of the second quarter, and Nelson Arambula scored in the paint to cut the deficit to 12-11. Schiel made a layup and a free throw, but Brennan Maez made a layup.
Schiel made two free throws, and Seth Zeigler split at the line. Luke Kinsley drained a 3-pointer and Pagosa led 21-13 at halftime.
Dozier opened the second-half scoring with a layup, but Jaidyn Burciaga made two treys and Zepeda made a jumper to close the margin to 23-21. Ziegler knocked down a jumper, but Zepeda then made two out of three free throws and later a layup to tie the score at 25-25.
Dozier split at the line to give the lead back to the Pirates, but Lujan buried a three for a 28-26 Alamosa lead.
Dozier again split at the line, and Zeigler scored in the paint for a 29-28 Pagosa lead. Zepeda made another jumper to give the Mean Moose a 30-29 edge at the end of the period.
Dozier put Pagosa back into the lead with a layup, but Zepeda made a 3-pointer and Burciaga a layup to give the Mean Moose a 35-31 lead.
Richey cut the lead to two points, but Zepeda drained another jump shot. Schiel made one of two from the line, but so did Gonzalez. Zepeda made two free tosses for a 40-34 lead.
Zeigler also made two from the line, but Zepeda answered with two of his own. Dozier hit a jumper, but Lujan split at the line.
Richey made a pair of charity tosses to bring Pagosa within 43-40, but Zepeda converted two more free throws. Zeigler drove for a layup, however, Zepeda made two more from the line.
Richey scored just as time expired to end the game.
Zepeda led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Burciaga with eight and Lujan with seven.
Dozier led Pagosa with 12 points, followed by Richey with 10.
Alamosa (4-18, 2-9) ended the season on Friday with a home game against fourth-ranked Centauri.
