ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School boys basketball team was looking to end a long losing streak when it hosted Bayfield Friday at the AHS gym.
The Mean Moose came close to defeating the Wolverines in their previous meeting on Jan. 17, losing 45-44 in overtime.
Alamosa gave Bayfield another tough game but once again it came up short in overtime as it lost 63-57.
Victor Zepeda gave the Mean Moose the early lead with a 3-point basket, and Jayden Lujan followed with a layup. Kingston Martinez put the Walverines on the board, but Jaidyn Burciaga drove for a layup for a 7-2 advantage.
Martinez drained a three, but Burciaga answered with one of his own. Austin Wilmer hit a jumper, but lujan scored again for a 12-7 Alamosa lead.
Bayfield got a jumper from Cameron Queen, and a three by Hayes Malone to tie the score at 12-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Nelson Arambula put the Mean Moose back in front to open the second-quarter scoring. However, Cooper Roderick tied the score, and Lincoln Williams scored two baskets to put Bayfield in front at 18-14.
Burciaga made a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 18-17. However, Roderick made a layup and later added two free throws. Arambula drove for a layup, but Isaac Forstythe knocked down a jumper for Bayfield. Lujan split at the free throw line, however, Williams made a layup, and Roderick also made a layup and also made a free throw.
Zepeda made two free tosses to bring Alamosa within 29-22 at halftime.
Zepeda began the second half with a trey. But Roderick made a jumper and a free throw. Williams made two free throws for a 34-25 Wolverines lead.
Tony Griego made a pair of charity tosses, and Burciaga made a layup to cut the deficit to 34-29. Queen then made two baskets and Williams two free throws to give Bayfield a 40-29 advantage.
Zepeda and Brennan Maez both hit jumpers to bring Alamosa within 40-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Zepeda’s. jumper accounted for the first points of the fourth quarter. However, Roderick hit a 3-pointer, and Williams slit at the line. Zepeda buried another trey to close the gap to 44-38.
Williams scored twice and Roderick once to give Bayfield its largest lead at 50-38. But Zepeda, Burciaga and Lujan each made threes to reduce the deficit to 50-47.
Roderick ended the run with a layup, but Zededa scored the final five points of the quarter to tie the score at 52-52 and send the game into overtime.
Martinez started the extra period with a 3-pointer. But Zepeda split at the line, and Lujan and Josh Gonzalez both made layups to give Alamosa a 57-55 lead - its first lead since the second quarter.
But the would be the final time it would have the advantage as Bayfield scored the final eight points. Roderick gave the Wolverines the lead for good with a three, and then Bayfield made five out of six free throws.
Zepeda led Alamosa with 23 points, followed by Burciaga with 14 and Lujan with 10.
Roderick was Bayfield’s top scorer with 24 points, followed by Williams with 17.
Alamosa also lost at Montezuma-Cortez 69-48 on Saturday. It also played at Monte Vista on Tuesday.
Alamosa (2-17) will host Pagosa Springs on Friday beginning at 7 p.m.
