ALAMOSA – The top-ranked Alamosa High School boys wrestling team ended a successful dual meet season on Thursday as it defeated Pagosa Springs 63-11 at the AHS gym.
The win also gave the Mean Moose the Intermountain League championship.
“We wrestled pretty good tonight,” said Alamosa coach Rusty Johnson. “We had a good night. I think we wrestled extremely well.”
The Mean Moose started with Jeremiah DeLaCerda receiving a forfeit victory at 106 pounds. Jonovan Gutierrez then won by a 15-0 technical fall over Garrett Eliot at the 3:33 mark at 113.
Anthony Meder also won by forfeit at 120.
Jonathan Olsen won by an 8-5 decision over Jonathan Baker at 126. Olsen drew first blood with a takedown, but Baker recorded an escape to close within 3-1 at the end of the first period. Baker started on the bottom to begin the second quarter and scored a reversal to tie the score at 3-3 after the second. Olsen got another takedown early in the third, but Baker again reversed the hold. Olsen finished off the match with a reversal.
Alamosa won the next two matches by fall. First, Pablito Rodriguez pinned Eric Smith in 3:17 at 132, and then Uriah Martinez pinned Stetson Osborn in 1:41 at 138.
Daniel Martinez then won by a 15-0 technical fall over Asher McKennie at 144. The tech fall came just as the second period expired.
Tony Griego increased the score to 43-0 as he pinned Vinny Fish in 3:15 at 150 pounds.
The Pirates got their first win of the dual meet at 157 pounds as Colton Lucero pinned Caleb Quintana in 45 seconds.
Ryan Cordova got the Mean Moose going again as he pinned Devin Gonzalez in 3:32 at 165.
Alexis Chavez then took an 8-5 decision over Ryker Hansen at 175. Hansen scored first with a takedown, but Chavez got a reversal to cut the deficit to 3-2 at the end of the first period. In the second period, Chavez got a takedown and a two-point near fall for an 8-3 lead. Hansen got a reversal in the third period but could come no closer.
At 190 pounds, Jovanny Mendoza pinned Truman Vasek in 1:06.
Pagosa Springs got its final win at 215 as Jimmy Elledge scored a 19-2 technical fall over Max Dokson at the 5:16 mark.
Aaron Jordan wrapped up the dual meet with a 16-1 technical fall over Hunter Martinez. The fall occurred as time expired in the match.
Alamosa finished 24-0 in dual meets this season.
“Fifteen of our wins were in dual meet tournaments, but 24 duals is what we had this year” Johnson said.
In fact, the Mean Moose defeated all of the IML teams this year. Centauri and Monte Vista during the regular season, Pagosa Springs in the IML championship, and Bayfield and Montezuma-Cortez in the Clash at the Coliseum in Farmington, N.M.
Alamosa will next compete in the Class 3A Region 3 Tournament in Delta on Feb. 13-14.
