ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School baseball team played at home for the final time this season as it hosted a doubleheader against Centauri Friday at Ortega Middle School.
The Mean Moose pitching was dominant as it swept the Falcons by scores of 10-0 and 15-5.
“Both starting pitchers came out and they pitched really great,” said Alamosa coach Tony Kechter. “They pounded the zone and defense did well behind them.”
The Alamosa hitting game was also effective as it tallied 19 hits for the entire doubleheader.
“We stated off slow the first game, but the second game, we were hitting the ball hard,” Kechter said. “We started hitting the ball better.”
Game 1
The Mean Moose took the early lead in the opener with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jaidyn Burciaga led off with a walk, and then stole second. He took third on Tony Griego’s groundout and scored on Jonah Pittman’s sacrifice fly.
Alamosa scored three times in the second. Foster Boyd hit a leadoff single and Nelson Arambula walked. Burciaga’s bunt single loaded the bases, and River Hodgson, who was courtesy running for Boyd, scored on Griego’s sacrifice fly.
Pittman’s infield single again loaded the bases, and A.J. Baker and Brennan Maez both walked to drive home Arambula and Burciaga, respectively.
The Mean Moose scored once in the third. Camdyn Montoya walked and stole second. He was driven home on Burciaga’s single.
Alamosa scored another run in the fourth. Baker walked to lead off the inning, and Maez also received a base on balls. Baker score as Clayton Treinen was safe on an error.
The Mean Moose scored four runs in the fifth. Burciaga led off with a single, and Griego followed with a single. Pittman singled home both runners, and Baker reached on an error and Pittman scored on the play. Maez singled home Baker to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Griego went the distance as the Mean Moose’s pitcher and he tossed a two-hit shutout. He had two strikeouts and no walks.
Drake Gallardo started on the mound for the Falcons and he took the loss. He allowed six runs and five hits with one strikeout and eight walks. Grayson Hunzeker finished the game and gave up four runs and four hits. He had no strikeouts and one walk.
Alamosa had nine hits and was led by Burciaga who went 3-3, Maez who went 2-2 with two RBIs, and Pittman who went 2-4 with two RBIs.
The Centauri offense was led by Hunzker and Ryer Norton, both of whom went 1-2.
Game 2
Centauri jumped out to the early lead in the night cap with two runs in the top of the first. Kingston Jaramillo and Leland Chacon both singled, and Warren Shelton walked to load the bases. Norton singled home Jaramillo, and Erik Garcia’s single brought home Chacon.
The lead wouldn’t last for long as Alamosa scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Griego started the rally with a double, and he was brought home on Pittman’s single. Baker was hit by a pitch, and Maez tripled to plate Pittman and Baker.
Evan Anderson singled to bring home Maez, and Anderson stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Elliot Mackey singled home Hodgson, who was courtesy running for Anderson.
The Mean Moose scored five more runs in the second. Griego and Pittman both walked, and Baker was again hit by a pitch. Maez walked to drive in Griego, and Anderson singled to score Pittman and Baker. Maez came home on Boyd’s sacrifice fly, and Mackey was safe on an error allowing Hodgson to score.
The Falcons scored a run in the top of the third. Dylan Gallardo hit a leadoff double and Norton walked. Dylan Gallardo scored on Garcia’s ground ball.
Centauri scored another run in the fourth. Kendrick Martin singled and stole both second and third. He scored on an error.
The Mean Moose put four runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Mackey reached on an error to lead off the inning and went to second on Arambula’s sacrifice bunt. Griego singled to plate Mackey, and Pittman doubled home Griego. Baker and Maez both walked to fill the sacks, and Anderson singled home both Pittman and Baker for a 14-4 lead.
Centauri scored one more run in the fifth. Chacon walked and stole second. Chacon scored on Norton’s single.
Alamosa scored a run in its half of the fifth. Arambula was safe on an error and went to third on Burciaga’s single. Griego reached on an error to bring home Arambula to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Anderson was Alamosa’s starting pitcher and he earned the win. He allowed five runs and six hits while striking out four and walking five. Maez finished the game and gave up no runs and one hit. He had no strikeouts and no walks.
Dylan Gallardo started for Centauri and he took the loss. He surrendered 14 runs and eight hits and he struck out two and walked eight. Hunzeker again finished the game and allowed one run and two hits with one strikeout and no walks.
The Mean Moose had 10 hits and were led by Anderson who went 3-3 with five RBIs, Pittman who went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs and Griego who went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The Falcons collected seven hits and were led by Norton who went 2-2 with two RBIs.
What’s next
Alamosa (13-9, 6-2) played at Florence on Tuesday. It will now await where and whom it will play in its regional tournament next weekend.
“We have a long wait for regionals,” Kechter said. “We’ll have towait about a week to find out where we’ll go for regionals.”
Centauri (9-9, 0-6) traveled to Trinidad for a doubleheader on Tuesday. It will next play at fourth-ranked Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday and close out the season at Ignacio on May 12.
