SACRAMENTO, Calif. — To chants of “ASU, ASU,” the Grizzlies women ran their way to their third national title in the past four years and the 61st title in school history. Despite having just one athlete, Elena Carey, finish in the top 10, the Grizzlies led from start to finish, securing the team’s 21st national championship at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Adams State scored 61 points, with all five runners finishing in the top 20. The Grizzlies will bring home six All-American honors. West Texas A&M took second place with 127 points, while fellow RMAC school CSU-Pueblo finished third with 160 points.
Elena Carey led the way for the Grizzlies, finishing seventh with a time of 20:43.2. The course, which saw rain earlier in the week and during the men’s race, was a mud pit, but it did not slow the Grizzlies down.
Teammate Tristian Spence was next across the line, taking 11th place in 20:51.8, while Morgan O’Keefe followed closely in 14th with a time of 21:02.1. Precious Robinson and Ava O’Connor crossed in 18th and 19th, respectively, with times of 21:03.9 and 21:04.3. Emily Schoellkopf was not far behind, finishing 23rd in 21:08.3 to round out the All-Americans for the Grizzlies. Katie Hughes finished 56th with a time of 21:41.7.
In the men’s 10K race, Romain Legendre was the top finisher for the Grizzlies, sprinting to third place in 29:46.8. Teammate Kidus Begashaw crossed the line 10 seconds later to take 14th place in 29:58.7. In his first official race in an Adams State uniform, Julian Campos finished 30th in 30:16.6.
Juan Rosales crossed in 30:30.3 to finish 39th and was the final Grizzly to capture an All-American honor. Housem Hrabi was next, finishing 44th in 30:36.4. Nathan Scherbarth finished 130th in 31:37.5, while teammate David Milan placed 140th in 31:42.5.
Adams State scored 113 points in what ended up being a close team race to take third place. RMAC school Colorado School of Mines captured the crown with 63 points, while Wingate narrowly took second with 66.
