MONTE VISTA – As it turned out, Monte Vista had its police chief all along as interim chief Tyler Harford was sworn-in by City Manager Gigi Dennis during the City Council meeting on Aug. 7.
Dennis stated that after rigorous interviews, she was pleased to announce that Harford had earned the title as Chief Harford.
Harford began working for Monte Vista Police Department in 2018 and was named interim chief in February. He worked for the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office for seven years, from 2011 to 2018.
Harford’s wife was there and smiled as she pinned his new badge to the front of his uniform, with everyone in attendance clapping.
“I just want to thank everyone who was involved in this whole process,” Harford said. “I am ready to get this over with and start a new chapter with the police department and in the community and get out there and get to work.”
In July, the final three chief of police candidates met with the public. There were 17 applicants for the position open since former Police Chief Sean McDonagh resigned in February after reaching a separation agreement with the city that included a $35,000 payout. McDonagh was hired in July of 2024.
A second ceremony was also held at the meeting to swear in Daniel Golden to the rank of corporal.
“Chief Harford, I just want to say that we are happy to be moving forward with a new chapter in the police department. I just pray that this is a sign of good things to come and that we can move on, get our numbers back up and have a successful rest of the year, and years to come. Thank you,” Golden said.
Also, during the meeting, Dennis formerly announced the resignation of Ski Hi Events Manager Stephanie Ruybal. Dennis said the city wishes her all the best in her future endeavors and thanked her for her service to the city.
City Clerk Unita Vance also announced there are two City Council seats open for the election in November. Anyone interested in running can contact the City of Monte Vista for more information.
The next city council meeting will be on Aug. 21 at City Hall.
