STAFF REPORT
ALAMOSA- On Monday, Xcel Energy sent out a communication to many local businesses and residents informing the public of a likely planned Public Safety Power Shutoff on Wednesday, April 22, due to high winds and extremely high fire danger predicted for that day. The risks are largely related to the potential of fire if power lines are downed or fallen trees land on power lines that are still functioning. Cutting power to all power lines in the area has proven to greatly reduces the risk of fire.
When asked for contingency plans, Alamosa City Manager Heather Sanchez sent the Valley Courier the following information with the note that a more formal press release can be expected this afternoon. This information was in response to questions around the status of emergency services - police or fire, signalized intersections, city hall operations and the municipal court.
As of 1:00 pm on Tuesday, the Alamosa Police Department (APD) has reached out to Colorado State Patrol (CSP) to see what their plan is for the signalized intersections. CSP has not provided information as of Tuesday early afternoon.
The Police Station/Fire Station #1 functions on a generator, so they will be operational. Fire Station #2 does not have a generator, but they are prepared and will be also operational. Therefore, all emergency services are operational.
City Hall also operates on a generator, so all services will be up and running, including municipal court. The Alamosa Public Library will not have power even though it is connected to City Hall so if there is the power is shutoff, the library will be closed.
The generator at the Alamosa Recreation Center is not sufficient to power the facility, so the Rec Center will also be closed if power is shut off.
If a power outage occurs and is still in place as of 4:00 p.m., Alsmosa city officials plan to cancel the Planning Commission and City Council meetings.
