MONTE VISTA — On a beautiful but cool morning on May 28, the Monte Vista Golf Course welcomed 50 men and women to participate in the 12th Annual Sgt. Glen E. Martinez 5K Run/Walk to honor and remember U.S. Marine Sgt. Glen E. Martinez, 31, who was killed in action along with three other Marines when the Humvee they were riding in hit a roadside bomb in Iraq on May 2, 2008.

The following are the results from the Sgt. Glen Martinez Memorial 5K Run/Walk: It was a really tight race to the finish for the men, overall runners with Keith Brockhurst — 20 minutes and 13.44 seconds for first in the 21-30 age division then John Naranjo — 21:11.17 for second and for third place Ignacio Lopez — 22:16.82 both in the 41-50 age division. We also had a very exciting women, overall runners finish with Julissa Naranjo — 28:27.64 in the 5-9 age division and is also John Naranjo’s daughter, Jenny Owsleu — 28:54.26 for second place in the 31-40 age division, and Joelie Boos — 32:56.95 for third-place finish in the 41-50 age division. Maybe next year John Naranjo will be running to beat his young daughter Julissa.
