MOSCA – The Sangre de Cristo High School volleyball team got back into league play on Thursday as it hosted Centennial Thursday at the SdCHS gym.
The Lady Thunderbirds had a relatively easy time in the first set, winning 25-9. They looked to be cruising in the second set before the Lady Rams came back to make a game of it. However, Sangre held off the charge and won 25-18.
The Lady Thunderbirds gradually built a lead in the third set and won 25-12.
Centennial scored the first point of the first set, but Sangre took a 2-1 lead. The Lady Rams then went on a 3-1 run to regain the lead at 4-3.
After exchanging side outs, the Lady Thunderbirds scored three straight points for an 8-6 lead. After a brief Lady Rams side out, Sangre scored nine unanswered points to take a 17-7 advantage.
The teams again traded side outs before the Lady Thunderbirds scored the final seven points of the set for a 25-9 win.
Sangre started the second set by scoring the first three points. After a Centennial side out, the Lady Thunderbirds went on a 3-1 run for a 6-2 lead.
The Lady Rams had another brief side out before the Lady Thunderbirds scored nine consecutive points to take a 15-3 advantage. But Centennial went on an 11-4 run to close the deficit to 19-14.
The teams again traded side outs before Sangre scored four of the final six points for a 25-18 win.
The Lady Rams took a 4-2 lead to open the third set. The Lady Thunderbirds scored three straight points for a 5-4 edge. Centennial tied the score at 5-5, but Sangre went on a 7-3 run to push its lead to 12-7.
The Lady Rams closed to within 12-9 before the Lady Thunderbirds had a 9-1 rally for a 21-10 advantage. Centennial narrowed the gap to 21-12, but Sangre scored the final four points for a 25-12 win.
Sangre was led by Kylie Smit with 18 assists and she also had six kills. Belle Beiriger led in kills with eight, and Haylee Freel had five.
The Lady Thunderbirds served up 17 aces and were led by Emma Jimenez with six, followed by Hallie Henry and Jaydra Cordova both with four, Beiriger with two and Smit with one.
Leading Centennial was Mariah Portillo with five assists. Amaya Garcia led in kills with five, followed by Reina Aguilera with three. Adriana Vigil had the Lady Rams’ only service ace.
Sangre de Cristo (7-8, 2-1) will host Mountain Valley this coming Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Centennial (3-7, 1-2) will host Creede today at 1 p.m.
