ALAMOSA – The Monte Vista High School boys golf team won the Class 2A Region 1 Tournament Monday at Hollydot Golf Course in Colorado City.

The Pirates had a score of 225, 18 strokes better than runner-up Swink. By winning its regional, Monte Vista qualifies all four golfers to next week’s state tournament.

Leading the Pirates was Kaden Mellott who was second with a 73. Liam Ellithorpe was third with a 75, Connor Mellott was fifth with a 77, and Jakoby Ross tied for 27th with a 99.

Del Norte, however, saw its season come to an end as it finished in 10th place with 317. Tytus Atencio tied for 27th with a 99, Landan Velasquez was 32nd with a 104, and Noah Bailey was 37th with a 114.

Las Animas’ Damien Baca was the medalist with a one-under-par 70.

The Class 2A State Tournament will be next Monday and Tuesday at The Club at Rolling Hills in Golden.

Two Moose golfers qualify for state

The Alamosa High School boys golf team competed at the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament Monday at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.

The Mean Moose finished in fifth place with 268.

Two Alamosa golfers qualified for next week’s state tournament. Serjio Najera placed 14th with an 86, and Kobe Mizokami was 18th with an 89.

Also golfing for the Mean Moose were Clayton Treinen who finished 24th with a 93, and Gibson Gillespie who was 39th with a 101.

Montezuma-Cortez, the host team, was the regional champion with 229. Peak to Peak was second with 239. Both schools qualified all four golfers to state.

Cortez’s Vince Lopez was the medalist with a two-under-par 70.

The Class 3A State Tournament will take place next Monday and Tuesday at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo.
