Mary Ann (Tootie) Mickelsen

Mary Ann Mickelsen passed away Nov. 22, 2024, in Alamosa, Colo., at the age of 91. She was born on March 25, 1933, in Lamar, Colo., to Mable (Ramsdale) and Charles Grett. 

The family moved to Monte Vista around 1937 to homestead land south of Monte Vista in the Bowen area. She graduated from Monte Vista High School and began her adventures. She met and married Wayne Brouse and they brought together four children and added one more to the family. After Wayne’s death in 1977, she married Nelson (Red) Mickelsen who brought two more kids to the fold. 

She worked as a telephone operator for many years, she also had many other jobs, including for the Alamosa Co-op, Community Corrections and ran and co-owned La Jara Auto Sales. 

Together her and Red had many years of adventures and shared their life for over 40 years. Family camping and fishing trips and playing the slots at the casinos were among her favorite times. She enjoyed travel and visited family every chance she could. She was always ready to offer her home and love to anybody who needed a place. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Red, her parents, brothers, Kenny Grett, Bill (Alta) Grett, sisters Betty (Bill) Bone, Marjory (Gene) Lain, Bernice (Ross) Hurt and daughter Peggy (Charlie) Braun. 

She is survived by her brother Don (Joyce) Grett, sons, Daryl (Joan) Brouse, Frank Brouse and Ron Mickelsen, daughters Gloria Carey, Lorie (Mark) Austin and Ellie (Tim) Hart. As well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. 

A memorial service for her and Red will be held at a later date.
