ALAMOSA – The Hot Shots won the 38th Annual Arby’s boys All-Star Game Friday, 73-70, Friday at Adams State University’s Plachy Hall gym.
Centauri’s Carson Bagwell scored the first points of the game for the Hot Shots, but Sierra Grande’s Aron Ojeda made a layup, and Monte Vista’s Alex Marquez made a 3-point basket for a 5-2 Top Shots lead.
Bagwell knocked down a jumper, but Marquez did the same on the other end. Del Norte’s LaShawn Trujillo drove for a layup, but Monte Vista’s Kaden Madrid and Centauri’s Troy Sowards both made layups to stretch the Top Shots’ lead to 11-6.
Madrid and Alamosa’s Jayden Lujan both drained threes, and Centauri’s Jace Haslett split at the free throw line for an 18-6 Top Shots advantage.
Sargent’s Lucas Garcia made a layup and Monte Vista’s Darrian Archuleta also made a layup and added a free throw Haslett drove for a layup and Madrid made one of two free throws for a 21-11 lead.
Sanford’s Ben Sittler made two baskets, and Bagwell and Centauri’s Todd Broyles both made one to reduce the deficit to 21-19. Sowards and Haslett both scored for a 25-19 advantage.
Bagwell made a layup. But Sowards did the same on the other end. The two players scored again before Sierra Grande’s Kobe Mizokami made a layup and Bagwell sank a trey to bring the Hot Shots within 29-28.
Haslett made a layup, but Trujillo scored in the paint, and Archuleta made two free throws to put the Hot Shots back into the lead at 32-31.
Del Norte’s Tytus Atencio hit a jumper to give the Top Shots a 33-32 edge at halftime.
Broyles opened the second half with a layup, followed by two baskets by Sittler for a 38-33 Hot Shots lead. Del Norte’s Jaedyn Estrada made a 3-pointer for the Top Shots’ first points of the half.
Lucas Garcia, Bagwell and Archuleta all scored to push the Hot Shots’ lead to 44-36. Sowards made a 3-pointer, but Monte Vista’s Jamian Martinez scored for a 46-39 lead.
Sowards and Haslett both made layups, but Archuleta hit a short jumper and then a three to give the Hot Shots a 51-43 advantage.
Ojeda split at the line, and Atencio and Monte Vista’s Ismael Medina both made layups to reduce the deficit to 51-48. Centennial’s Jose Molina and Bagwell both scored, and Lucas Garcia made one of two free throws to push the lead to 57-48.
Lujan made another trey, but Bagwell drove for a layup. Estrada made a 3-point basket, but Centauri’s Kamryn Garcia made a layup and a three for a 64-54 Hot Shots lead.
Sowards then hit a jumper, Marquez a trey, and Haslett a layup and a free throw to bring the Top Shots within 64-62. Archuleta, however, buried a three for a 67-62 lead,
Sowards knocked down a jumper, and Haslett made two free throws to reduce the deficit to 67-66. Trujillo pushed the lead to three, but Haslett scored again.
Archuleta made two layups, but Haslett also scored a layup.
The Hot Shots turned the ball over with two second remaining and set up a potential game-tying shot. Haslett’s long 3-point attempt was short.
Archuleta and Bagwell both scored 19 points to lead the Hot Shots. Sittler was next with eight.
Haslett was the Top Shots’ leading scorer with 18 points, followed by Sowards with 13, and Marquez with eight.
Slam dunk contest
The slam dunk contest took place at halftime of the boys game. Sowards was the dunk champion.
