ALAMOSA – The Adams State University’s football season came to a close on Saturday as the Grizzlies lost to South Dakota Mines at Rex Field.
A shanked punt set up the Hardrockers’ first score with Tobin Frost catching a 1-yard touchdown pass from Jake Martinelli. Connor Taylor made the point-after and South Dakota Mines had a 7-0 lead.
The Grizzlies answered on their next possession as they drove to the Hardrockers’ 44. However, ASU settled for a 54-yard field goal by Brysen Gardner.
South Dakota Mines scored again on their next possession. This time Dawson Dunbar ran one yard for the touchdown and Taylor botted the extra point for a 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Taylor kicked a 43-yard field goal the next time the Hardrockers had the ball and the lead grew to 17-3.
South Dakota Mines scored one more touchdown in the second quarter as Kevin Bruxvoort caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Martinelli on the tackle eligible play. Taylor made the extra point for a 24-3 advantage.
The Grizzlies closed out the half with a 23-yard field goal by Gardner.
South Dakota Mines scored twice in the third quarter. First Gunner Rohloff scored on a 31-yard run with Taylor making the point-after. Then Alex Sturn caught a 1-yard touchdown from Martinelli. This time, the extra point attempt was blocked and the Hardrockers led 37-6.
Holden Gilbert closed out the scoring with a 34-yard run. Taylor made the extra point.
Alex Reid led Adams State in both rushing and passing. He ran for 78 yards on 20 carries, and he completed four out of 11 passes for 42 yards. Aaron Johnson was his top target with three catches for 43 yards.
Christian Toeleiu led the Adams State defense with 11 tackles.
Gilbert led South Dakota Mines with 179 yards on 18 carries. Martinelli completed 14 of 18 passes for 130 yards, and Colton Grover led in receiving with five receptions for 71 yards.
Adams State finished the season with no wins and 11 losses and the Grizzlies were 0-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
