After six days of intensive search efforts for two missing elk hunters, the bodies of two unidentified men were found roughly two miles from the Los Pinos Trailhead in the Rio Grande National Forest.

The unknown whereabouts of two hunters reported missing since September 13 has prompted a massive search of the area in the vicinity of the San Juan Wilderness Area in Conejos County.

In a first-ever distinction, two officers from Alamosa Police Department and two deputies from Alamosa Sheriff's Office were sworn in as Special Deputies with the U.S. Marshal Service. The arrangement, created via a MOU between the U.S. Marshal Service, Alamosa County and City of Alamosa, allows the four to function as Task Force Officers whose job, when needed, will be to apprehend violent fugitives in the San Luis Valley, Southern Colorado and other areas as assigned. "It's a real force multiplier for local law enforcement," says CO U.S. Marshal Kirk Taylor who swore them in. "It's also a very dangerous job."
