MONTE VISTA - SLVREC Energy Foundation generously donated $10,000 on April 1, to the SLV 4-H Endowment Fund. 

ALAMOSA — Earlier this week, a young bull moose wandered into a fenced in area at the Rio Grande Farm Park and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) staff had to assist him in finding a way out. 

CENTER — The Saint Peter and Saint Paul Catholic Church in San Pedro received an upgrade of rain gutters from a 17-member group of skilled volunteers from the Knights of Columbus Council 1498 from Saint Mark's Parish in Highlands Ranch, Colo. This successful collaboration is a testament to the power of community and volunteerism. 

RIO GRANDE COUNTY – For the third straight year, Rio Grande County Commissioners in partnership with Rio Grande County Noxious Weed Department and the Monte Vista School District gave four students $500 scholarships for participating in the Noxious Weed Scholarship Program.

MONTE VISTA – The day was near perfect, with plenty of sun and a refreshing breeze, for the Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday, May 3, in Monte Vista.

On May 1 she became the first business teacher and FBLA advisor to receive the Educator Highlight Award from the Adams State School of Education. When a contingent from Adams State and the Alamosa School District showed up to present her with the award, she was just launching her class into a session on the value of Roth IRAs. 

ALAMOSA — The Youth Ballet Program, directed by Yula Cisneros Montoya, will have its annual recital at Adams State University in Richardson Hall Auditorium at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 10.

MOFFAT — Moffat Pk-12 Schools recently competed in the National Archery in the Schools Program 2025 National Western Tournaments in Sandy, Utah, representing Moffat and Colorado. Archers from across the country and several provinces turned in nearly 6,000 Individual scores across three separate shooting venues. The tournaments began on April 24 and continued through April 26.  

ALAMOSA – In a heartwarming display of community support, San Luis Valley Behavioral Health Group (SLVBHG) partnered with Hank Maxwell, a local YouTuber, Veteran, and family man, along with his corporate sponsors, to donate a high-performance gaming PC to a local Veteran in need. 

ALAMOSA — For those aficionados of Folk, Roots and Americana music who hold a special place in their heart for well-known and remarkably gifted singer-songwriter and activist types of musicians, all one needs to say is “Eliza” and it’s immediately known the person being discussed is Eliza Gilkyson. That is just one indicator of what kind of impact Gilkyson has made on the hearts, minds and souls of listening audiences.  

ALAMOSA — For his 25th Main Stage theatrical production at Adams State University (ASU), John Taylor, Chair of ASU’s Theatre Department, chose the award-winning “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”. 

ALAMOSA — San Luis Valley Trout Unlimited would like to invite all interested individuals to its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 24, at 7 p.m. at the Alamosa Senior Center, 92 Colorado Ave. The community is invited to join a special evening of conservation and youth-led innovation. 

DEL NORTE — The South Fork Music Association, which puts on the San Luis Valley's oldest and largest music festival, announced the lineup Wednesday. It includes more than a dozen musical acts and a wide variety of musical styles.  

ALAMOSA — Jason and Paloma Mestas never saw themselves owning and operating an ice cream shop. Paloma was teaching middle school English and Jason was a farmer. But after Covid, they began thinking about doing different things with their lives. A stop in Denver set them on a whole new path. 

ALAMOSA — A few steps into Friar's Fork in Alamosa, you realize you are in for a specular experience.  The host stand is the pulpit from the former church that occupied the venue, a poignant reminder of the building's rich history.  The lovely interior has a touch of elegance and nostalgia without being fancy. 

CENTER – On April 12, the newly remodeled Town Hall Annex, Senior Center and Court Building was the place to be as the Town of Center hosted a Craft and Bake Sale for the community.  

The fifth annual Cinco de Mayo Festival is set for Saturday, May 3, from 12 to 5 p.m. on Adams Street in downtown Monte Vista. It was started by the OptiMystics Citizens Action Network, who decided not to do it this year leaving the event’s future uncertain.  Sandra Marquez and Terry Carroll have stepped up and are organizing the event this year with the help of volunteers.  

MONTE VISTA - La Puente’s Jessica Apodaca Ornelas was all smiles at the Fashion Show on Saturday, April 12, at The Church Project Community Art Center in Monte Vista.
