VFW student contests open now

SAN LUIS VALLEY— The VFW Posts and Auxiliaries of District 7 would like to encourage high school and middle school students in the San Luis Valley to participate in their scholarship programs.
The Patriot’s Pen Essay is open to sixth, seventh, eighth grade students. This year’s theme is “Why I honor the American flag,” and the deadline is Oct. 31. It is open to students enrolled in public, private or parochial school or home school.
The Voice of Democracy Essay is open to students in grades nine through 12. This year’s theme is “Why my vote matters;” Oct. 31 is the deadline. Students who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial school or home study program are eligible. For more detailed requirements and/or for an application, please contact a VFW member. The national first place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship.
The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest is open to any student in grades nine through 12 and is open for all talented artists. The national first place winner receives a $10,000 scholarship.
Entry forms and applications should be available at all San Luis Valley schools.
