Traffic diverted around scene for nearly an hour

MONTE VISTA — A three-vehicle collision in front of Dairy Queen in Monte Vista impacted the Thursday morning, April 8, commute.  

A maroon SUV, a white utility truck and a Monte Vista School District Food Services van were involved in the accident that was reported at 7:56 a.m., according to the Monte Vista Police Department.  

Both lanes of 1st Avenue were blocked from Washington Street to Broadway Street. Traffic was diverted around the area until the scene of the crash was cleared at approximately 8:50 a.m.  

The SUV was traveling east on 1st Avenue. The van was heading west on 1st and stopped at the intersection at Broadway. The truck was northbound on Broadway, MVPD reported.  

The SUV did not see the light was red, possibly due to the sun in their eyes, went through the intersection and crashed into the front of the truck, according to MVPD.   

The SUV sustained damage to its front and was towed away. The white truck was driven away from the crash. The van received minor damage to its front end and was driven from the incident.  

No significant injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing. 

The Monte Vista Fire Department and the Colorado Department of Public Safety assisted in clearing the crash scene.
