Public works activities in full swing

MONTE VISTA— With Stampede getting closer, the Monte Vista Public Works Department is out in full force preparing the streets and areas for the parades and events of July 25-28.
Currently there are crews working the parade route and the detour routes. This work includes sweeping, weed eating and mowing the public ways. Next week the crews will be out working the Ski Hi Complex and doing any touch up items that need attention. All of these work sites create some areas that residents need to keep in mind and behave in safe manner. Some of the public ways have weeds and rocks and small rocks can be thrown during the weed eating operations. The City asks residents that when you see us working in the public ways to give us plenty of room for your safety. This may include using the other side of street when walking.

Other activities going on in public works
Staff is working with our engineers on a number of projects for this year. The one big project is the replacement of water lines and the paving of Dunham from 4th to Lariat. The City’s goal starting this year is to complete a section of dirt roads each year. Dunham is serving as a test so surveying and other work is currently taking place. The sewer project this year will be to replace the trunk line feeding the Veteran’s Waste Water Plant. This, too, is being engineered. Other work that is going on is property clean ups, mowing of City properties and some sign installations plus normal maintenance activities.
On the water side of things, the City is having some issues with residents and their dogs when conducting meter reading operations. The technicians can’t read the meter if dogs are loose in the yards. They read the same time each month beginning on the 15th. Residents are asked to keep their dogs in the home or restrained from the meter touch read location during the reads for the employees’ safety. There have been a few employees bitten by dogs. This is very unfortunate for everyone involved and could be solved very easily. If the technicians have continued issues with dogs the City will come out and install a meter pit on City ROW for the residence and the owners will be billed for time, materials and equipment used. The City really doesn’t want to add to individual customer’s cost but employee safety is of the utmost importance.

Important items to remember
Meter reads start on the 15th of each month and usually last three to five days; utility bills need to paid on a timely manner. Failure to pay will result in us turning off utilities until payment is made. Property owners are ultimately responsible for the utility bill. If you rent a property, both the renter and the landlord receive bills. Watering restrictions are still in effect, no watering on Mondays—gardens are exempt from this regulation. And lastly please keep everyone safe.
