MONTE VISTA — The Monte Vista Pirates Marching Band won the state championship Monday, Nov. 4, at Stocker Stadium, Grand Junction, Colorado. The 2019 1A State Champions are under the Band direction of Jason Paschall and have once again made the San Luis Valley proud.
The Monte Vista Marching Band has a long history of accolades. In 2018 they placed second in state after performing in the CBA State Marching Band 1A Championships at CSU-Pueblo.
In 2017 the band placed fourth in the State Championships. The last time the band won state was 2010.  
The Pirates had a total performance score of 67.40 to narrowly take the State Championship over Florence High School which scored 66.35. Third place went to Estes Park High School with a score of 63.80 while fourth place went to Cedaredge High School with a total performance score of 63.05.
Bands are scored on three categories: Music Performance (Individual, Ensemble), Visual Performance (Individual, Ensemble) and General Effect (Music I, Music II, Visual). Tabulation for scoring is based on the following formula: 60% Music, 40% Visual, 60% Effect and 40% Performance. Music Performance is the Average of the Music Individual and Music Ensemble for 20%. Visual Performance is the Average of the Visual Individual and Visual Ensemble for 20%. General Effect is the Total of the Music General Effect 1 + Music General Effect 2 + Visual General Effect for 60%.
You can see the State Champions perform this Sunday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m. during the 2nd Annual “LIVE” Veteran’s Benefit Concert. The concert will be held at the Central Auditorium, 545 Second Avenue, Monte Vista, Colorado. The concert is to honor our Veterans and the proceeds go to the Faith Hinkley Veteran’s Memorial Park. The cost of the tickets is $10.00 per person and are available by contacting Colette Skeff at 719-852-3435 or Debbie Garcia at 719-580-5655 ahead of the concert or they may be purchased the night of the concert.
