One dead in downtown Monte Vista crash

MONTE VISTA — Four men from West Virginia on a hunting trip in Colorado were injured in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning, Nov. 10, in downtown Monte Vista, the driver succumbing to his injuries.

Monte Vista Police Department Police Chief George Dingfelder said the crash occurred just before 6 a.m. when the westbound 2013 Chevrolet pickup drifted out of its lane on First Avenue (Highway 160) just west of Broadway (US285), crossed the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a tree on the south side of First.

All the occupants were transported to the San Luis Valley Regional Hospital in Alamosa where the driver succumbed to his injuries. The other occupants sustained moderate to serious injuries. Two of the occupants were transferred to Front Range hospitals with serious injuries. The fourth was admitted to SLV Regional Hospital with moderate injuries.

While it is early in the investigation, impairment by drugs or alcohol is not believed to have contributed to this crash, Dingfelder said in a press release. The names of those involved will not be released until confirmation that all family members have been notified.

The Monte Vista Police Department was assisted by the San Luis Valley Victim’s Response Unit, Monte Vista Fire Department, Monte Vista EMS, Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol. More information will be released once the investigation is complete.
