Monte Vista woman dies in head-on crash

ALAMOSA COUNTY — A 46-year-old Monte Vista woman died in a head-on crash on Highway 160 near milepost 227 on Friday afternoon, Nov. 12, the Colorado State Patrol reported.

At approximately 4:50 p.m., CSP responded to the two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 160 between Alamosa and Monte Vista. The crash involved a Hyundai Elantra and Jeep Cherokee and resulted in a fatality.

The driver of the Hyundai Elantra was Melissa Chacon, 46, of Monte Vista.  Melissa Chacon died at the scene, CSP reported.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was Faith Pacheco, 23, of Monte Vista.  Faith Pacheco sustained serious injuries and was transported to San Luis Valley Health before being flown to a higher trauma center.

The Hyundai Elantra was traveling westbound on Highway 160. The Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound on Highway 160. The Hyundai Elantra drifted off the north edge of the road and then completely into the eastbound lane.

The Hyundai Elantra’s front left impacted the Jeep Cherokee’s front left in the eastbound lane. After impact, the Hyundai Elantra rotated counterclockwise 360 degrees coming to rest facing west and blocking the westbound lane.

After impact, the Jeep Cherokee rotated counterclockwise 180 degrees traveling off the south edge of the roadway and coming to rest facing west along the dirt roadside.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
