Mary Ann Messick

Mary Ann Messick passed away May 21, 2023, in Tucson, Ariz., a month shy of her 92nd birthday. She was born June 20, 1931, in Monte Vista, Colo., to Leto and Lorna LaJune Scott Kehler, the fifth of eight children.

Mary graduated from Sargent High School, and received a degree in Home Economics from Colorado A & M. She married Richard Lee “Dick” Messick on April 10, 1953, and they recently celebrated the milestone of 70 years of marriage.

Mary and Dick lived and farmed in the Sargent Community, and enjoyed entertaining at their place in Crestone, Colo. Their children and grandchildren have fond memories of picnics and making cider with the apple press at the Crestone house.

They moved to Tubac, Ariz., in 1989 where she lived until her passing. She was an excellent homemaker, cook and hostess, making sure family and guests felt welcome in their home. Mary and Dick hosted weekly Bible study and prayer groups for many years. Mary was very knowledgeable at identifying birds and wildflowers in both Colorado and Arizona. She enjoyed playing golf in her younger years and looked forward to her weekly bridge group until the week before her passing.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Leto and LaJune Kehler, and siblings Don Kehler, Marjorie Jones, Jeanne Roberts, Margaret Caruso, and Leatrice Malouff.

She is survived by her loving husband Dick Messick; sons Richard (Beulah), and Doug (Julie); daughter LeeAnn (Mark) Sisson; seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; and her sisters Judy Hale and Ardy Maddoux.

Per Mary’s wishes, her body was donated to science. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Tubac, Ariz.
