DENVER – Longtime San Luis Valley resident Billy Walter Evans, 78, died June 6, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Denver.
He was born Oct. 18, 1933 in McLean, Texas, to Walter and Mary Evans.
He served his country in the U.S. Army in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He married Juanice Sims on April 20, 1957 in McLean.
Following his discharge, he returned to the academic life and received his Bachelors Degree in Geology from Texas Tech, then received his Master’s Degree in school administration from Western State College in Gunnison.
He and his family moved to the Bowen comunty to farm in March 1968, where he farmed for 12 years.
Billy became a teacher and then a Principal in the Monte Vista school system, touching many young lives in his time in education. He next built Log Cabins for a living. His real love was for walking in the mountains studying rocks and looking for
petroglyphs. He also loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His parents and his brothers, Robert Evans, Jim Evans, Joe Evans and John Evans, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Juanice Evans of Alamosa; his children; Billy, (Charlotte) Evans and Joy (Perry) DiCamillo both of Monte Vista and John (Cheryl) Evans of Alamosa; his grandchildren, Joe (Amanda) DiCamillo of La Jara, Ashlee Evans (Josh Tucker) of Charlotte, N.C., and C.J. Evans of Denver; his great-grandchildren, Perry, Gracie and Alden DiCamillo of La Jara; his siblings; Jerry Corbin of Lincoln City, Ore., Sue Modderman of Elizabethtown, Ky. and Linda (Doug) Ellison of Richmond Hills Ga.
The funeral service was Monday June 11, at the Valley Christian Church in Monte Vista. Burial was in the Colorado State Veterans Cemetery at Homelake.
In lieu of flowers contributions are suggested to the charity of your choice in memory of Billy.
