Marcella Madrill takes part in a mock drunk driving accident at Monte Vista High School last Thursday.
MONTE VISTA—Monte Vista High School’s S.H.O.C.K (Student’s Helping Our Community and Kids) Club sponsored a Pre-Prom mock accident on the morning of April 24.
During this activity, students were made aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as texting and driving. Beginning with the Colorado State Patrol, students watched a video presentation showing them actual accident footage, along with interviews of family members and victims.
Then, the “Grim Reaper” escorted them to the accident scene where the drunk driver was arrested and the fire department, local police and paramedics confirmed one fatality. Two other students were then transported by ambulance to the emergency room (gym), where students were able to witness the medical staff in action. Del Norte Hospital Staff members, Candice Allen, Kayla Beiriger and Steve Smith brought their simulation man, so students were able to observe how the staff would work tirelessly to save a life.
Tami Fassett played the distraught mother, which brought the emotional level in the room to a higher level. Many observers had tears in their eyes as Fassett watched her son “die” in the emergency room and were overcome with grief. To conclude the morning’s events, students pledged with their thumbprint not to drink or text and drive.
