DEL NORTE – While being transported from the Rio Grande County Courthouse in Del Norte back to the Rio Grande County Jail by deputies at approximately 11 a.m. on Friday, April 18, David Marquez, 44, of Monte Vista, briefly escaped.

Marquez bolted away from his escort and made it half a block away to 630 Oak Street where he attempted to take refuge. Two deputies, assisted by Del Norte Police, quickly took Marquez back into custody.

Rio Grande County Sheriff Brian Norton said all he could say at this time is, “We are still investigating the incident and I can’t say more until I get further details.”

Marquez is the suspect in an April 8 carjacking in the Lowes parking lot on Highway 50 in Pueblo. Pueblo Police Department officers were dispatched to the Rodeway Inn on West Highway 50 at 9:15 a.m. on April 8 in response to a carjacking.

Acting on numerous tips from the public and through Crime Stoppers, Marquez was arrested by Monte Vista Police without incident at 6th Avenue and Washington Street in Monte Vista on Wednesday evening, April 16 on an outstanding arrest warrant out of Pueblo.

Marquez is being held in the Rio Grande County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond.
