ALAMOSA — Services are pending locally with Romero Funeral Home of Alamosa for 14-year-old Kiana Rae O’Neil who died on December 23 in Colorado Springs after her stepfather Army Officer 2nd Lt Daniel Meade, 29, shot her when he mistook her for a burglar entering the family’s northeastern Colorado Springs home.
According to Colorado Springs news sources, the incident occurred just before 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, when Meade called 9-1-1 to report shooting a burglar and subsequently informed authorities the person he shot was not a burglar but his stepdaughter Kiana who may have been trying to sneak into the house through a basement window after a night out.
Meade apparently shot the teen in the stomach and chest. She was alive when police arrived at the scene but later died in a Colorado Springs hospital.
The District Attorney's Office will decide what charges, if any, will be made against Meade. He could face no charges under the 'Make My Day' law. He has not been arrested.
Meade is listed as an active-duty health service officer assigned to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson.
Kiana was the oldest of three children. On a memorial Facebook page launched in her honor, information was shared that Kiana was a freshman as Vista Ridge High School but had formerly attended school in Del Norte. She was remembered for her bright personality and infectious smile.
