MONTE VISTA—More than 50 people gathered at the Shriver-Wright State Wildlife Area in Monte Vista for the official opening on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The area was named in honor of Doug Shriver and Ray Wright who had worked locally to protect the Valley’s water resources. Shriver’s widow, Karla Shriver, who serves as a Rio Grande County commissioner, spoke during the opening. In an email interview following the event, she described the area as, “a perfect tribute to both Doug and Ray, who were both outdoorsmen.”
