DEL NORTE - For more than 30 years the Colorado Lottery has provided funds for open space, parks and recreation and wildlife projects. More than $2.4 billion, (50 percent of lottery sales) have been returned to the state since 1983.

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Awards recognize excellence in the use of lottery funds for community and conservation projects.

Winning projects are chosen based on the “creativity of the project, economic and social impact to the community, and whether the project achieved its goal.”

In the past, the Starburst award has been presented to big cities and destination resorts that have had big, high profile, glitzy projects.

They wanted a project that stretched the imagination of what a small town would normally do with lottery funds. They asked the GOCO board of trustees for a recommendation.
