ALAMOSA—San Luis Valley County Commissioners Association Officials (SLVCCA) heard budget requests from various agencies last week with decisions scheduled for next month.
Sixteen agencies requested a total of $1,013,964 from the Valley’s six counties, according to the SLVCCA report. Last year, the total budget request was $984,612 and an $883,733 budget was approved with almost all agencies receiving less than the solicited amount. In 2012, the counties awarded $984,612 in funding.
In county funding request tradition, the district attorney asked for the largest amount of money, since it is what chiefly enables the office to exist. According to the report, District Attorney Dave Mahonee requested $693,582 to support a staff he struggles to keep, due to low salaries. In 2013, he was awarded $642,854, roughly $30,000 short of his request, money that could have contributed to staff retention and hiring. Over the past few months, the office has sought more funding through grants and the counties to keep operations running.
