DEL NORTE — Basing their decision on the serious need for change, the Rio Grande Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) Sept. 25 adopted a tougher oil and gas operations code, while acknowledging it needs more “teeth.”
Commission Chair Karla Shriver noted a motion to adopt an updated code was made and seconded in February, but no vote was taken. That motion could be disapproved, approved as a “living document,” with a task force created to work on changes, or table it until further notice.
The motion was killed, and discussion led to a motion by Bricker that the matter be tabled, pending further consideration.
Veteran commissioner Doug Davie pointed out that “if they came in today with a permit, we would have to abide by the old regulations.”
Shriver suggested, “Approve it today, then get together a task force and consider all the comments and suggestions. Everyone needs to have a seat at the table and add to the decision.”
